Trump Administration Appeals to Overturn 'So-called' Judge's Stay on Travel Ban

Washington: Donald Trump’s administration has appealed a federal judge’s order that blocked the US president’s ban on travellers from seven Muslim-majority nations.

The Justice Department appeal on Saturday comes one day after a US district judge filed a nationwide order halting the ban’s implementation. Since then, the Department of Homeland Security has reverted to standard, previous procedure in admitting people from the affected countries.

The Department of Justice declined to comment on the appeal “beyond the filing at this time,” in an email to AFP.

The appeal was filed even as the US government began to roll back the contentious visa bans targeting majority-Muslim countries.

The judge opens up our country to potential terrorists and others that do not have our best interests at heart. Bad people are very happy!

The high profile setback provoked Trump to fire off an attack on the judge, almost unprecedented for sitting president.

“The opinion of this so-called judge, which essentially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and will be overturned!” Trump tweeted early Saturday from his Mar-a-Lago Florid retreat, where he is on a three-night getaway.

What is our country coming to when a judge can halt a Homeland Security travel ban and anyone, even with bad intentions, can come into U.S.?

US District Judge James Robart of Washington State — an appointee of Republican president George W Bush — issued a nationwide order blocking Trump’s bans late Friday. By early Saturday, the US government began implementing the judge’s order.

The department early said up to 60,000 people had their visas revoked as a result of Trump’s order, although a Justice Department attorney put the number at closer to 100,000.
