The United States today decided to provide security guarantees to North Korea, in exchange of Pyongyang’s firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.
This is according to the joint document which was signed by US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un following their historic maiden talks at Singapore’s Sentosa island.
The document also said, both nations commit to establishing new relations in accordance with the desire of the people of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
Earlier, addressing a press conference after the talks, Mr Trump said, he and Kim have developed a very special bond. He said, the talks went better than anybody could have expected.
Asked whether the two leaders have reached an agreement on denuclearisation, Mr Trump said, they will be starting the process very quickly. He said, the relationship with the Korean peninsula will now be different.
Kim said, they have decided to leave the past behind, and the world will see a major change. Before the delegation-level talks, both leaders met for a one-on-one meeting for about 45 minutes.
Earlier, Mr Trump expressed hope that the summit would be tremendously successful. Kim said, there were a number of obstacles to the meeting and they overcame all of them.
Trump and Kim are the first leaders of their respective countries to meet, marking the culmination of months of diplomatic wrangling and negotiations.
Later, Mr Trump again addressed a press conference, in which he said, his talks with Kim were honest, direct and productive. The US President asserted that there will be a complete denuclearisation, and it will be verified.
On a question about troops in South Korea, Mr Trump said, he is not reducing military capabilities, but will stop its military exercises with South Korea which routinely infuriate Pyonyang. He expressed hope that the Korean conflict will end soon.
The US President asserted that North Korea has already started destroying a missile engine testing site, and US is prepared to starting a new history with North Korea. Mr Trump also thanked Singapore for hosting the summit.
