Russia has said that reports of a gas attack in Syria were bogus. It said any military action taken based on what it called invented and fabricated excuses could lead to severe consequences.
Russian Foreign Ministry today said the spread of bogus stories about the use of chlorine and other poisonous substances by Syrian government forces continues.
At least 70 people have been killed in a suspected chemical attack in Douma, the last rebel-held town in Syria’s Eastern Ghouta. Rescuers and medics say the deaths were likely to rise. The
White Helmets tweeted graphic images showing several bodies in basements. It said, there has been no independent verification of the reports. Syria has called the allegations of a chemical attack a fabrication.
The US state department said Russia with its unwavering support for Syria’s government ultimately bears responsibility for the alleged attacks.
Pope Francis has deplored the gas attack. At the end of a Mass in St. Peter’s Square, he said nothing can justify the use of such instruments of extermination on defenceless people.
