US pushes UN to follow tougher stance on Iran

United States has urged the UN Security Council to follow in the US footsteps and confront Iran over what it describes as aggressive, destabilising and unlawful behaviour of Tehran in the region.

The council met for its monthly debate on the Middle East yesterday, days after US President Donald Trump refused to certify the Iranian nuclear deal, leaving its fate to the US Congress.

US ambassador to UN Nikki Haley accused Tehran of playing the council by complying with technical provisions of the deal while threatening peace and security in the Middle East with its outlaw behaviour.

She said, Iran must be judged in the totality of its aggressive, destabilising and unlawful behaviour and to do otherwise would be foolish.

The 2015 nuclear deal was unanimously endorsed in a Security Council resolution, placing the onus on the top UN body to uphold its implementation.
