Watch how scientists are attempting to replace the ubiquitous chemical BPA in food and drink cans

By Nguyen Nguyen, Joel Goldberg

Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical found in many of the world’s food and drink cans, has been linked to cancer and other health problems, and it’s now banned in several countries. Researchers at the paint and coatings company Sherwin-Williams have developed a chemical that they believe, based on lab tests, is safer than BPA. It’s called tetramethyl bisphenol F, and the company has worked with independent scientists to minimize controversy around the chemical’s impact. The company already sells the new lining for cans, but a question lingers: Will its high price, about twice BPA’s, preclude the chemical from widespread adoption?
