Sania Mirza, Purav Raja-Divij Sharan win Wimbledon openers

Sania Mirza was in top form at Wimbledon on Wednesday as the Indian tennis ace with Belgian partner Kirsten Flipkens progressed to the women’s doubles second round in London.

Earlier, all India pairing of Purav Raja and Divij Sharan also advanced to the men’s doubles second round after a hard fought four-set opener.

Sania was in her elements as she and Flipkens downed Japanese-Chinese pairing of Naomi Osaka and Shuai Zhang 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 12 minutes on Court 11.

The 13th seeds will now take on the winners of the match between Naomi Broady-Heather Watson and Katie Dunne-Harriet Dart in the second round.

Earlier in the day, Indian pair Raja and Sharan toiled for more than three hours before defeating Joao Sousa and Kyle Edmund to enter the second round.

The final score read 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (6) in favour of the Indians. The match lasted for three hours and three minutes.

Raja and Sharan have been doing quite well together of late. The duo entered the Round of 16 at the French Open. They will now face South African-American combo of Raven Klaasen and Rajeev Ram for a berth in Round 3.

However, it was the end of the road for India’s Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan. Jeevan and American partner Jared Donaldson lost to all British pairing of Jay Clarke and Marcus Willis 7-6(4), 7-5, 6-7(3), 0-6, 3-6.
