Shreyas Iyer special carries Delhi Daredevils to win vs Gujarat Lions in IPL

A scintillating 96 by Shreyas Iyer helped Delhi Daredevils maintain their winning record against Gujarat Lions in the Indian Premier League as they beat the hosts by two wickets with two balls to spare at the Green Park on Wednesday. (GL vs DD: IPL T20 MATCH BLOG)

Iyer, 22, who had a half-century against Sunrisers Hyderabad as his best in IPL 2017, kept Delhi Daredevils victory hopes alive despite wickets falling at regular intervals. His 57-ball 96, including 15 fours and two sixes, helped the Zaheer Khan-led side stretch their head-to-head record to 3-1. (GL vs DD: IPL T20 SCORECARD)

Though Iyer missed his maiden century in Twenty20 cricket by a whisker, bowled by Basil Thampi off the second ball of the final over, he had by then put Daredevils on the verge of victory.

The 17th over bowled by James Faulkner went for 21 runs, including two sixes by Shreyas Iyer and one by Pat Cummins, and made a big change. Amit Mishra (8no) and Mohammed Shami (4no) finished off the job in the end.

Jadeja, Raina effect run-outs

Delhi Daredevils didn’t look like making it at one point after losing three crucial wickets due to superlative fielding by Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja. First, Raina produced a smart run out from slip after Rishabh Pant (4) came out of the crease without realising that Pradeep Sangwan’s delivery had gone towards Raina off his pads. Only two balls earlier, Sanju Samson (10) had been clean bowled by Sangwan trying to pull a short-pitched delivery.

In the 10th over, Ravindra Jadeja ran out Marlon Samuels (1) with a direct throw, before repeating it in the 12th over to catch Corey Anderson short.

Finch hits half-century

Australian Aaron Finch struck his second half-century in IPL-10 to help hosts Gujarat Lions score 195 for five after Zaheer Khan chose to bowl.

Finch, who scored his best of 72 against Royal Challengers Bangalore at Bengaluru last month, struck a 39-ball 69, with six fours and four sixes.

He was bowled in the 19th over trying to hit Shami’s full-length delivery. Finch had added 92 runs for the fourth-wicket with Dinesh Karthik, who made a 28-ball 40. Young opener Ishan Kishan hit a 24-ball 34 after Gujarat skipper Suresh Raina was bowled by Aussie pacer Pat Cummins for six.
