DD need 196 runs to win off 120 deliveries

THE GUJARAT LIONS

Over 20 | Score 195/5 | Faulkner 14 (8) ; Jadeja 13 (7)

And it is Pat Cummins pacing in for the final over now. First ball, Faulkner gets a two with a shot down to deep midwicket. Iyer makes a throw, but Pant fails to take the catch cleanly as the wicket-keeper sits down, holding his thumb in agony. He is immediately attended by the physio and the Pant leaves the field. Samson takes over the responsibility. Three more runs picked up between the wickets by Faulkner off the next two deliveries. Last ball, length, angling way in as Faulkner shifts left swinging his bat only to get an inside edge and off it goes to the boundary past the keeper.

Over 19 | Score 183/5 | Faulkner 3 (3) ; Jadeja 12 (6)

Shami yet again now to finish off with his quota. First ball, full toss to the off as Jadeja directs it down midwicket for a boundary. Loose balls in the past few overs have actually assited Gujarat to now think of a big total. But Shami makes a remarkable return with a superb yorker to dismiss Aaron Finch.

AJ Finch b Mohammed Shami 69 (39b)

James Faulkner is the new man in. Eight runs off the over.

Over 18 | Score 175/4 | Finch 69 (37) ; Jadeja 7 (4)

And it is Pat Cummins in for his third over now. Second delivery, over-pitched, well off as Finch lofts it over cover for a boundary. And four more! This time the ball angles in towards leg side as Finch shimmies side-ways to whip it over mid-on for a boundary again. 11 off the over.

Over 17 | Score 164/4 | Finch 60 (34) ; Jadeja 5 (2)

Brathwaite paces in to finish off with his quota and he gets rid off Dinesh Karthik. First delivery, fuller as Karthik lofts it for a biggy, too short as Anderson takes it at long-on.

KD Karthik c Anderson b Brathwaite 40 (28b)

Second delivery, length, angling in as Finch volleys it over the bowler to get a boundary and that brings up his half-century. Fourth ball, high full toss, well off as Jadeja cuts it past third man for a boundary. Brathwaite seems to face the tension of bowling in the death over. The over ends up with a boundary from Finch.

Over 16 | Score 148/3 | Finch 49 (31) ; Karthik 40 (27)

And it is Zaheer Khan in for his fourth and final over. Fifth ball, knuckle ball and Finch crackles it over midwicket for a six. Productive over indeed for the Lions – 14 runs off it.

Over 15 | Score 134/3 | Finch 41 (27) ; Karthik 38 (25)

And it is Brathwaite yet again into the attack, for his third over now. First ball, short and down to leg side as Finch pulls down the paced up delivery down fine-leg for a boundary. Poor delivery indeed! Four singles off the next five deliveries, so a good comeback by the pacer.

Over 14 | Score 126/3 | Finch 35 (24) ; Karthik 36 (22)

More pace into the attack as Mohammed Shami sprints in for his third over. Five runs off the five deliverise bowled and then comes the six. Last ball, Karthik sends the angling in delivery, straight over the bowler, down the line for a six.

Over 13 | Score 115/3 | Finch 33 (21) ; Karthik 27 (19)

Pace attack continues with Corey Anderson now. First ball, cross-seam, angling in as Finch with a little inside edge drags it down midwicket for a boundary. Anderson certainly not happy with that. A similar ball to Karthik off the third delivery as Karthik drifts the pace down leg side for a boundary again. 11 already off the five deliveries. Dot ball to finish.

Over 12 | Score 103/3 | Finch 27 (18) ; Karthik 22 (16)

And it is Pat Cummins into the attack yet again for his second over. Just four singles off the first four deliveries bowled as GL cross the 100-run mark. Past few over have indeed been beneficial for DD, lowering the home team’s run rate. Five off the over.

Over 11 | Score 98/3 | Finch 25 (14) ; Karthik 20 (14)

And it is Corey Anderson into the attack now. Fourth ball, short, seaming in as Karthik crunches it down cover for a boundary. Tidy over form the Kiwi international, seven off it.

Over 10 | Score 91/3 | Finch 23 (11) ; Karthik 15 (11)

And the pace-spin combo continues with Carlos Brathwaite yet again. Just six off the over.

Over 9 | Score 85/3 | Finch 20 (8) ; Karthik 13 (8)

Mishra again back into the attack for his second over now. Third ball, length, middle as Finch rocks back to ramp it over long-on for a massive six. And six more! Fourth delivery, tossed up, well off as Finch slices it over long-off for another maximum. 15 off the over.

Over 8 | Score 70/3 | Finch 6 (3) ; Karthik 12 (7)

Carlos Brathwaite into the attack now. He replaced Kagiso Rabada after the South African departed on national duty. Fourth delivery, back of the length, down to leg side as Finch punches it down square-leg for a boundary. Eight off the over.

Over 7 | Score 62/3 | Finch 1 (1) ; Karthik 9 (3)

And after a lot of pace attack, here comes Amit Mishra with some leg-spin action. Second delivery, fuller, down leg side as Kishan sweeps to drift it down leg-slip region for a boundary. Similar line yet again, but a googly this time, as Kishan with the similar shot gets a leading edge and the ball arcs to Zaheer Khan at short third man.

Ishan Kishan c Khan b Mishra 34 (25b)

Aaron Finch is the new batsman in. Fifth ball, down leg side as Karthik glances it down past the keeper for a boundary. 12 off the over, but that big wicket indeed.

Over 6 | Score 50/2 | Kishan 28 (22) ; Karthik 4 (1)

Last over of power-play as Pat Cummins paces in for his first over now. Three singles off the first half of the over. Fourth ball, short, well off as Raina shimmies right for an upper cut over point for a boundary. Fifth ball, fuller, seaming in, low as the ball zipped below the swinging bat to rip apart the stumps. Off goes Raina as Gujarat dent further.

SK Raina b Cummins 6 (5b)

Last ball, new batsman Dinesh Karthik slices the outside off lengthed delivery down cover for a boundary.

Over 5 | Score 39/1 | Kishan 26 (20) ; Raina 1 (2)

Zaheer once again, into his third over now. Fifth ball, over-pitched, well off as Kishan looking for that shot down cover gets the little inside edge to send the ball down past the keeper to the boundary. Real luck for the youngsters! Eight off the over.

Over 4 | Score 31/1 | Kishan 20 (16) ; Raina 0 (0)

And it is Shami yet again into his second over now. First ball, short and slow as Smith drags it down to backward square-leg, but too late for that single as the fielder throws it and Shami does it. Dwayne Smith departs real early in the game. And he doesn’t seem happy at all.

DR Smith run out 8 (8b)

Skipper Suresh Raina at the pitch now. Third delivery, short and low as Kishan picks up the sweep shot to put it over the fine-leg boundary for a six. Brilliant from the young lad! Fifth ball, short and down the leg side as Kishan pulls it again over square-leg for a boundary. Bad delivery from the experienced Shami. 10 off the over.

Over 3 | Score 21/0 | Kishan 10 (11) ; Smith 8 (7)

And the skipper paces up yet again for his second over. Second delivery, fuller, seaming to the leg side as Kishan punches it down midwicket for a boundary. Single off the last ball as the over sums up to just six runs.

Over 2 | Score 15/0 | Kishan 6 (7) ; Smith 7 (5)

And sharing the new ball is Mohammed Shami. Third delivery, length, seaming well to the off as Kishan beautifully timing it, slices it down point for a boundary, Well, played by the youngster indeed. Waited to settle in after all the testing deliveries, got one for himself and whacked it down to the boundary. Eight off the over.

Over 1 | Score 7/0 | Kishan 1 (2) ; Smith 6 (4)

A ‘ride for pride’ for either of the ousted franchises as Gujarat Lions take on Delhi Daredevilsa t Green Park, Kanpur. Gujarat remains unchanged, while quite a number of changes for the visitors with few overseas players leaving on national duty.

And as usual, Zaheer Khan starts off with the new ball against young Ishan Kishan and experienced Dwayne Smith.

Second delivery, length, down leg side as Smith pushes it down square-leg for the first boundary of the match. Just seven off the first over.

Gujarat Lions have struggled to find rhythm right throughout the tournament despite boasting of some world class players in Brendon McCullum, Aaron Finch, Dwayne Smith, James Faulkner and skipper Suresh Raina. The Lions haven’t been able to decided the batting positions for these batsmen – something which has severely hurt their campaign this year.

Lions will be without the services of McCullum, who has flew back home after suffering a hamstring injury. Gujarat have been hurt by their lack of depth in bowling and they are now at the sixth spot with four wins and eight losses.

Daredevils, on the other hand, have had a mixed campaign, where their batsmen have let them down. Led by Zaheer Khan, their bowling attack was probably the best in the business with Pat Cummins, Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada tormenting the batsmen with their fearsome pace.

With eight points from 11 games, Delhi had held on a faint hope of qualifying for the play-off but once Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Mumbai Indians to move into 15 points, it was all over for Zaheer Khan’s men.

The last time both this teams faced each other, it was the Daredevils who had the last laugh when they beat Gujarat by seven wickets at home.

It was a special innings by young Rishab Pant, who had blown away the Lions with a 43-ball 97 to script one of the best chases in IPL history.
