Over 4 | Score 39/1 | Lynn 21, Gambhir 0

Narine scored to consecutive boundaries off Mohit Sharma’s bowling before getting bowled on a slower one. Skipper Gambhir, who comes out to bat, won’t be too worried as plenty of firepower still left to come.

SP Narine b Sharma 18 (10b)

Over 3 | Score 31/0 | Narine 10, Lynn 21

A fairly better over for KXIP, just six off it with just one boundary being scored by Chris Lynn. Punjab need more than that to keep themselves afloat in the tournament.

KINGS XI PUNJAB

Over 20 | Score 167/6 | Axar 8 (10) ; Tewatia 15 (8)

Last six deliveries to go now Gambhir surprisingly gives the responsibility to young Ankit Rajpoot. Three fielders deep in the boundary. Just singles off the first two deliveries. Rajpoot wants mid-off and third man in. And a single more off the slow and low delivery. Fifth ball, fuller, across the line as Tewatia paddle sweeps it down square-leg far a boundary. Last abbl to go, yorker to the off as Tewatia slices it down to cover for a boundary.

Over 19 | Score 158/6 | Axar 7 (8) ; Tewatia 9 (4)

And it is Chris Woakes back again to finish off with his quota for the day. Second delivery, slow, length ball, seaming in slightly, inside edge and red goes the bails. Swapnil Singh departs.

Swapnil Singh b Woakes 2 (2b)

Rahul Tewatia is the man in. His second ball, paced up, well to the off, fuller too as the lfet-hander slices it over cover for a boundary. Fifth ball, slow, bouncer, seaming well off as Tewatia shimmies right to pull hook it over short fine leg for another boundary.

Over 18 | Score 148/5 | Axar 6 (7) ; Swapnil 2 (1)

Spin attack to come to an end with Kuldeep’s last over now. Punjab will surely rely on Saha now and there it is. Six from the Bengal boy. Googly, length as Saha slices it high over for a the six and crosses the long-on boundary by inches. And the goes down Saha. Googly again, well, well off. Saha shimming down to strike it to the off side, but misses it by inches as Uthappa stumps him out.

Over 16 | Score 128/4 | Axar 0 (1) ; Saha 27 (28)

Five more overs to go as Kuldeep Yadav is brought back for his second over. First ball, bang! Six it is! Fuller, leg side, googly as well, and Maxwell muscles it hard over long-on boundary. And then again. Middle line and Maxwell does it again. And down goes the skipper. Third ball, places it well wide to the off as Maxwell reaches out to slice it up for another biggy, but not to far as Woakes runs along the deep to take it at long-off.

GJ Maxwell c Woakes b Kuldeep Yadav 44 (25b)

Axar Patel is the new man in.

Over 15 | Score 115/3 | Maxwell 32 (22) ; Saha 26 (26)

And Gambhir returns back to his go-to-man, Sunil Narine to break this partnership. A single off the first delivery and 50-run partnership for the duo. Third ball, lengthy, spinning in as Saha makes little bit room to shovel it over short extra cover fielder for a boundary. 10 off the over.

Over 14 | Score 105/3 | Maxwell 28 (19) ; Saha 21 (23)

And it is time for some spin now as Kuldeep is being introduced into the attack. Five runs picked up between the wickets with some real good sprinting by the duo off the three deliveries bowled, brings up 100 for KXIP. Eight off the over.

Over 13 | Score 97/3 | Maxwell 26 (17) ; Saha 15 (19)

And from experienced pacers, Gambhir shifts to youngsters.Well, no other option left for the skipper. It is Ankit Rajpoot into the attack now. Second delivery, quicker bouncer, Saha lookiing for a pull gets a top edge as the ball balloons over the keeper, one bounce and over the rope. Fifth delivery, short and low as Maxwell powers a drag shot over midwicket for another boundary. 11 off the over.

Over 12 | Score 86/3 | Maxwell 21 (13) ; Saha 10 (17)

It is enough of settling in, giving themselves time as the batsmen should start firing the deliveries down to the boundaries. And thus comes the six. Third delivery, length, low as Maxwell powers it over long-on boundary for a maximum. And it is six more. This time a shorter spell from de Grandhomme as he pulls it over backward square-leg. Punjab surely needs more of this Maxwell-show.

Over 11 | Score 67/3 | Maxwell 6 (9) ; Saha 7 (15)

Pace and pace and Woakes in for his third over now. Just three runs picked up between the wickets from the four deliveries bowled and then just a single-bye off the next two deliveries.

Over 9 | Score 57/3 | Maxwell 1 (3) ; Saha 3 (8)

And it is Woakes again, back in for his second over and he strikes off Shaun Marsh off the very third delivery. Good length, little bit of seam as the balls seeps through bat and pad to set the bails go red.

SE Marsh b Woakes 11 (10b)

Over 6 | Score 41/2 | S Marsh 1 (3) ; Saha 0 (1)

And it is Sunil Narine to finish off with the power-play overs. Shaun Marsh is the new man at crease. Few anxious deliveries and Guptill is the man to depart next. Fifth delivery, length, low as Guptill looked on to paddle sweep it down leg side, but the ball spun a little to quick to strike off the pads.

MJ Guptill lbw b Narine 12 (16b)

Over 5 | Score 39/1 | S Marsh 0 (1) ; Guptill 11 (13)

Umesh back into the attack for his third over. Second delivery, length, slower, seaming down to the leg side as Vohra shimmies down to ramp it over midwicket off his back-foot to get a boundary. Fourth delivery, shorter, seaming to the middle as Vohra shimmies down to slice it over point for another boundary. And Umesh finally guns him down with a bouncer that gets a knick of his glove and Uthappa standing behind takes it comfortably.

Over 3 | Score 19/0 | Vohra 6 (7) ; Guptill 11 (11)

Umesh Yadav yet again into the attack for his second over now. On the mic is Chris Lynn, saying that his shoulder is yet not 100% fit, but that he trying to fit in and get better. Runs are coming in ones and twos as the over sums up to eight.

Over 2 | Score 11/0 | Vohra 1 (3) ; Guptill 9 (9)

Glenn Maxwell-led Kings XI Punjab eye nothing less than two points as they take on Gautam Gambhir’s rampat KKR side, who too would look to avoid complecancy in a bid to finish in top two spots of the IPL 2017 points table.

To book a place in the play offs, Punjab not just need to win their remaining three matches but also want Sunriers Hyderabad or Rising Pune Supergiant to lose all of their remaining matches. However, a win today for KKR would seal play-offs positions, with the current top 4 as the final teams to progress in the next round.

One of the most troublesome decisions for Maxwell as captain would be replacing Hashim Amla, who has left the competition for South Africa’s ODI series against England. Matt Henry, Darren Sammy remaining the possible replacements for the Proteas star.

For Gambhir, meanwhile, a return of Robin Uthappa seems likely.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Indian Premier League (IPL) Match 49:
