Strangely, cricket fans will witness season’s firt meeting between Delhi Daredevils and the Gujarat Lions. Mind you, the 10th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) is already in it’s fifth week and more than 40 matches have been played.

When these two struggling teams fight to survive the day, it will bring an air of unpredictability. One doesn’t know for sure which side is the favourite. Host Delhi, having a game at hand, seem to have a better position than their visitors from Gujarat, even though both the sides have six points apiece.

Delhi revived their campaign with a thrilling win over defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad in their last match, thanks to an all-round batting performance. They will need to carry that winning momentum, and keep their chances alive for a play-off spot. But it’s still a tough one. Here, what they can do is take one thing at a time, and the first one is to tame the Lions.

READ FULL PREVIEW HERE

It will not be an easy task. Despite the win against Hyderabad, Daredevils still have many things to ponder to, with the prominent one being Zaheer Khan’s unavailability. The inspirational is hamstrung, and in his stead, Karun Nair will once again need to do an exceptional job to lead the team. With five games, including today’s fixture, Delhi can still make the play-offs though, if they win all their remaining matches. At least, that’s what they are hoping for.

A similar narrative in going on in the Lions’ camp. They have six points from 10 matches. If they manage to win all their remaining four matches, including today’s, and with some favourable results from elsewhere, the Lions can still hope for an outside chance to make the play-offs. It’s imperative to understand here, outside means outside. A defeat today, and they will join Royal Challengers Bangalore in the lurch.

What’s worrying most for the last year’s table toppers’ is the team’s collective failure. An otherwise power-packed team is now struggling to keep things together for an concerted effort, and as a result, lost few close games, including a Super Over finish against Mumbai Indians. Skipper Suresh Raina, pacers Basil Thampi and Andrew Tye were the only stand out performers so far. But Tye is out injured.

If they are to give themselves any realistic chance of making the play-offs, then winning these remaining matches becomes mandatory. For that to happen, every lion in their ranks will need to show up.
