New Delhi: With the ongoing scuffle between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) over India’s participation in the upcoming Champions Trophy, lot is being said. And amid those, South African white ball skipper AB de Villiers has come forth to place his views on the same.
Considering how India won the tournament on 2013, Mr. 360 feels that the team under a new leadership, under Virat Kohli, should be allowed to defend the title whatever the situation between the BCCI and ICC.
Speaking to NDTV about India’s participation, AB said, “The ICC would want India to play the Champions Trophy. India won it last time in England and they will be ready for a strong campaign around this year as well.”
He further added that he honestly didn’t believe it at first. “I would personally love to see India play and so will the cricket fans,” he mentioned.
AB believes that the Indian Premier League (IPL) is one opportunity for all the players to hit a couple balls, and see whether they can stay in form before heading into a tournament as big as ICC Champions Trophy.
Talking about his own nation, he feels few of his countrymates participating in the cash-rich league — Kagiso Rabada, Hashim Amla, Chris Morris, Imran Tahir etc — are all in the best of form and this would help them get the trophy their way.
Presently in India for the ongoing 10th edition of IPL, where the right-handed batsmen is part of Royal Challengers Bangalore. The last year’s finalists fell off the race to the play-offs. Even for AB, apart from an innings or two, nothing has been spectacular from the 33-year-old.
