IPL 2017: Gujarat Lions name Irfan Pathan as replacement for injured all-rounder Dwayne Bravo

New Delhi: Veteran Indian pacer Irfan Pathan, who went unsold at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction earlier this year, has been roped in by Gujarat Lions as a replacement for West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo – who will miss the rest of the tournament due to a hamstring injury.

Irfan, who failed to attract a bid despite a decent base price of Rs 50 lakhs, had posted a photograph of himself wearing a Lions jersey on Twitter, with a message that read – “looking forward to be part of this wonderful unit.”

Irfan was a part of the MS Dhoni-led Rising Pune Supergiant last year, where he scored just 11 runs in three innings and went wicketless in the eight overs he got to bowl.

Meanwhile Lions, who have had a forgettable tournament so far, were hoping that Bravo would recover for the second half of the tournament. But in their previous match against Kings XI Punjab, skipper Suresh Raina revealed at the toss that the West Indian was undergoing rehabilitation and will miss the rest of the tournament.

“No Dwayne Bravo. He’s been doing proper rehab and it might take three-four weeks, so he might be out of the tournament. So now we have to talk to the management and think about a replacement,” Raina said during the toss.

Bravo also released a statement confirming the same.

“It is with deep regret that I announce my decision to withdraw from the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League, owing to my hamstring injury,” his statement said.

Gujarat Lions would be Irfan’s sixth franchise as he has represented Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Daredevils, Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rising Pune Supergiant in the past.

Despite boasting of some of the finest players of T20 format, Lions are currently wobbling at the bottom of the points table after just two wins from seven matches.
