Champions Trophy: Will BCCI's rift with ICC cost Virat Kohli and Co an opportunity to defend title in England?

New Delhi: Just a little less than a couple of months before the ICC Champions Trophy starts off in June, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering pulling Team India out of the tournament as ICC plans to introduce a new constitution which aims to reduce India’s share in resources.

The world’s richest cricket board has firmly maintained its stance on the new financial model and is unwilling to accept the international body’s proposal which will shake up the way cricket is run.

This news arrived in the wake of a two-hour long Special General Meeting which made the BCCI representatives furious and hence it is likely for them to pull out Men in Blue from the tournament, as a means to boycott the ICC’s ruling.

The BCCI also threatened ICC to not let India take part in the tournament nicknamed as ‘Mini World Cup’, unless the ‘Big Three’ proposal is not met.

“BCCI reserves its rights to take all necessary decisions to exercise the rights under the Members Participation Agreement (MPA)” an anonymous source of the BCCI stated.

The ‘Big Three’ provides excess power to the three major cricketing nations- Australia, England and India and further ensures a considerable amount of share in global revenues and facilitates them to have a larger role in administrative decisions of cricket world wide.

As far as cricket fans are concerned, they will be hoping the conflict gets resolved soon, else the world might get deprived of the opportunity to see the defending champions in the mega event.

The Champions trophy begins on June 1 and will end on June 18, with Virat Kohli and Co. scheduled to play Pakistan on June 4.
