IPL 2017, Match 7: Mumbai pull off a heist against Kolkata in season's first cliffhanger

VIVO PERFECT CATCH OF THE MATCH– Mitchell McClenaghan

YES BANK MAXIMUM SIXES– Manish Pandey (5 sixes)

STYLISH PLAYER– Manish Pandey

MAN OF THE MATCH– Nitish Rana

Summary– Stunning turn of that game! None would have surely expected that miraculous last minute fight back to grab that victory off the jaws of defeat. Courtesy Pandya brothers and Nitish Rana.

KKR started strong smacking some real boundaries with Lynn and skipper Gambhir at crease. But soon wickets started falling and Krunal Pandya was the man behind. Manish Pandey stood strong at the crease to take that total to 179. His brilliant knock of 81 made Kolkata take that commanding position in the match.

With MI stepping out the openers posted a 60 run stand before Parthiv departed and soon successive batsmen too fell around. Rana maintained the patience, going in aggressive at times to bring up his fifty. But it was still not enough for the Mumbai lads.

Game turned off the last three overs when Rana went for some big shots to reduce the gap to 20 off 10. But the young Rajpoot got the better of him to strike him off. All hope rested on Hardik Pandya.

13 was needed of the last over, and nothing but luck rested on his back. First that misfield to get a boundary and then Dhawan dropping him at midwicket. Boult still charging in, but Hardik flicked it back to get a bounndary again off that penultimate ball to pull that absolute stunner.

MI grabbed that two points they needed to move to position four on that table. While KKR remains at two.

Over 19.5 | Score 180/6 | Harbhajan 1 (1) ; Hardik 29 (10)

11 off 6 now. Boult with the ball and Hardik on strike. Enthralling indeed. Hardik gets a two off that first ball. Smart and quick between the wicket. 9 off 5 now. Misfield and gets that four down the line. Short delivery this time. 5 off 3 now. Hardik strikes it high, high but Dhawan misses that opportunity to dismiss MI’s hope. 3 off 2 now. Penultimate ball, Hardik crunches it past deep square leg for that winning shot. And MI wins by 4 wickets. Absolute stunner!

Over 19 | Score 168/6 | Harbhajan 1 (1) ; Hardik 19 (6)

30 to go more off 12 balls. Can they pull a stunner or will KKR get the better off them again? Rajpoot into the attack and ran in style scoops it over the keeper for a six. Anmd now a four 50 comes up for the Delhi boy, Rana. 20 off 10 needed. Exciting turn of the game now. Pressure still on though. Wide ball now. 19 0ff 10 now. And thats…wicket for Rajpoot! Dot full toss and he slices it to point and Narines takes that catch with ease. Rana departs and with that the hope to win for MI.

Bhajji is the new batsman. 18 off 8 now. Pandya strikes a six over midwicket. Punches that full toss away over the ropes. Spectacular. 12 off 7 now. Takes a single to keep the strike.

Over 18 | Score 149/5 | Rana 39 (25) ; Hardik 12 (4)

Over 12 | Score 97/3 | Rana 18 (12) ; Krunal 11 (5)

Kuldeep Yadav comes back for his third over. Not much of a difference from what KKR were at this stage. Rana gets that cheeky touch to that spin and sends it to third man to get three runs. And now slogs it over midwicket to get a boundary. And then again. This time over extra cover for a six.

Its a huge match underway at Mumbai’s home ground. They will be banking on home crowd cheer to get bag crucial win; while for the City of Joy, they will be continuing with their winning game, giving a tough fight to Warner’s men.

Good thing for the MI, Malinga has returned to replace Southee. Harbhajan Singh too has made his way to the team list.

MI is there on the field, in a hudle, discussing their plan as Gambhir and Lynn make their way to the pitch. No doubt, Malinga will be starting the attack for Mumbai. And skipper Gambhir will be at strike.

First ball, yorker to start off with. His usual, nothing surprising. Gambhir smartly tapping the ball to get off the mark with a single. Another toe-pusher, but to the leg side. Umpire signals for a wide. Lynn too gets a single, pushing the fast paced delivery to the cover region. Last ball, Lynn powers it down the wicket to get that boundary. Deadly yorker to finish off. Expensive first over. 10 off it.

New Delhi: Injury stricken Mumbai Indians prepare for their first home match of the season, taking on heavy-weights Kolkata Knight Riders who secured a dominant 10-wicket victory over Gujarat Lions in their previous game.

The MI fans will be delighted to see T20 specialist Lasith Malinga making his comeback in the squad on the back of a hat-trick against Bangladesh, although in a losing cause; but they will be saddened by the injury picked up by Ambati Rayudu.

Though form may be hinting towards another KKR victory, statistics are strongly against the Gautam Gambhir-led side which has managed to win just one match out of their previous nine battles against their Mumbai-based oppositions.

As MI look set to shuffle their squad after defeat in the previous encounter against Rising Pune Supergiant, fans might be seeing veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh making a comeback in the squad.

KKR, meanwhile, will have the Bangladesh skipper and all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan back in their ranks, further boosting their bowling and batting options.
