New Delhi: Indian captain MS Dhoni finished the 2011 World Cup final with an emphatic six over the head of Sri Lankan seamer Nuwan Kulasekara in the 49th over – a moment that will forever be cherished by Indian cricket fans – but the historic match didn’t start on the smoothest of notes.
During the toss, Dhoni was had the coin in his hand while his Sri Lankan counterpart Kumar Sangakkara was to call. Accompanying them were commentator Ravi Shastri and match referee Jeff Crowe at the center of a packed 33,000-capacity Wankhede Stadium.
After the coin landed on the ground, Crowe said it was heads and Dhoni began to shake Sangakara’s hand hoping to put India to bat first but the Sri Lankan claimed that he had called heads.
The match referee then made matters worse by claiming that he had not heard Sangakkara’s call, resulting in the toss to be done again and Sangakkara came out as the winner.

Speaking about the incident, former England captain Michael Vaughan had tweeted, “Sangakkarra has stuffed Dhoni… He shouted tail in the 1st toss and lost it …You can hear it in on air. (sic)”
