South Africa vs West Indies, World Cup 2019: Match abandoned due to rain

The 2019 International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup clash between West Indies and South Africa has been abandoned due to incessant rain at the Ageas Bowl in Hampshire on Monday.

Here are the highlights from the match:

# Match abandoned due to rain.

# There will be a pitch inspection at 3.15 pm (U.K time).

# The play has been interrupted due to rain. Quinton de Kock and Faf du Plessis are currently batting at 17 and 0, respectively. South Africa 29/2 (7.3 overs)

# Faf du Plessis is the new batsman in!

# WICKET! Cottrell strikes again. The West Indies bowler targeted Markram (5) with the short ball and the South African flicked it down to the third man, only to see Shahi Hope grab the catch behind the wicket. South Africa 28/2 (6.1 overs)

# South Africa 28/1 (5 overs)

# Six runs off the last over. Roach bowled a full and slightly wide of the stumps on the fifth ball and Markram beautifully flicked the ball and it evaded a diving Jason Holder for four runs. South Africa 17/1 (4 overs)

# Aiden Markram is the new batsman in!

# WICKET! Sheldon Cottrell gave an early breakthrough to the West Indies by removing Hashim Amla for six. The South African opener was caught by Chris Gayle at slip on the fifth delivery of the third over. South Africa 11/1 (2.5 overs)

# Good second over from Kemar Roach as he conceded just a single to de Kock. South Africa experienced a nervy moment when De Kock edged the first delivery of the over to keeper Shai Hope. However, de Kock went for the review, which showed the ball came off his arm instead. South Africa 4/0 (2 overs)

# Just three runs off the very first over from Cottrell. De Kock got off the mark by whipping the first delivery to the onside for a single, while Amla opened his account by leaning into an overpitched delivery that cleared the offside field to notch up two runs. South Africa 3/0 (1 over)

# Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock to begin South Africa’s innings. Sheldon Cottrell will begin the proceedings for the West Indies.

# The two sides have walked down the crease for their national anthems.

# Lineups:

South Africa:  Quinton de Kock (wk),  Hashim Amla,  Faf du Plessis (capt), Aiden Markram,  Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Andile Phehlukwayo,  Chris Morris,  Kagiso Rabada, Beuran Hendricks, Imran Tahir

West Indies: Chris Gayle, Darren Bravo, Shai Hope (wk), Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer, Jason Holder (capt), Carlos Brathwaite, Ashley Nurse, Kemar Roach, Sheldon Cottrell,  Oshane Thomas

# Both sides have made two changes in their Playing XI. While South Africa have roped in Aiden Markram and Beuran Hendricks, Darren Bravo and Kemar Roach have been brought in by the West Indies in place of Evin Lewis and Andre Russell, respectively.

# Toss! Jason Holder wins and he decides to field against Proteas.

# The toss is all set to take place in a few minutes.

# West Indies defeated Pakistan in their opening match before giving a tough fight to the Australians.

# South Africa have lost to England, Bangladesh and India.

A powerhouse in international cricket, South Africa have been unable to fire in ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 so far. With three successive defeats in the tournament so far, the team looks rickety, haggard and almost on the cusp of an unceremonious exit. West Indies, on the other hand, have shown a lot of spirit and banked on pace and power-hitting to intimidate rivals. Not every result has gone their way so far but the team has established itself as a force to reckon with.

The two teams are set to clash at Southampton where the track has so far favoured pace bowlers. The South Africans were troubled here by the Indian pace battery in their last match and relief may not be in sight with the likes of Jason Holder, Oshane Thomas and Sheldon Cottrell in ominous form currently. What could work favour of the Proteas is that a number of their batsmen have a solid reputation and can explode at a moment’s notice.

The conditions are dry and it is expected to be a riveting contest.
