Gautam Gambhir announces retirement: A look at the prolific opener’s records

Indian opener Gautam Gambhir on Tuesday released an 11-minute video message on his Facebook profile announcing his decision to retire from all forms of cricket. Let’s take a look at the statistics as well as the international records held by the batsman.

The 37-year-old has scored 4154 runs in 58 Tests at an average of 41.95, which includes nine centuries and 22 half-centuries. He has further accumulated 5238 runs in 147 ODIs at an average of 39.68 and strike rate of 85.25.

Gambhir played a critical role in India’s success during the T20 World Cup in 2007, scoring a match-winning 75 against Pakistan in the final.

Not only this, he ensured similar performances in the ICC World Cup 2011, smashing 97 under pressure against Sri Lanka to help the Men in Blue lift the World Cup.

Gambhir was a vital member of the Indian team that reached the No.1 spot in Test cricket in 2009. His consistent performances further earned him the ICC Test Player of the Year award in 2009.

The opener has also enjoyed great success in the Indian Premier League (IPL), finishing as one of the three captains to lift the trophy twice. Gambhir enjoys the distinction of being the most successful captain in the tournament, having registered 71 wins in 129 matches.
