India vs England 2nd Test Day 3: Chris Woakes century puts England in control

Chris Woakes and Jonny Bairstow built a massive 189-run stand to put England on top on Day 3 of the second Test at Lord’s.

Here are the highlights from Day 3:

# Stumps! England 357/6 ( Chris Woakes 120*, Jonny Bairstow 93 / Mohammed Shami 3/74). Hosts lead by 250 runs!

# Bad light stops play!

There is a rain forecast at Lord’s tomorrow on Day 4. Should England, who have a decent lead of 245 runs, declare and put India to bat?

# India have taken the new ball.

Curran (19) continues to maintain a healthy strike rate and Chris Woakes at the other end is happy to bat as long as he can. England lead by 239 runs and anything from here is bonus runs for the hosts. This Test is turning out to be a one-sided contest. England 350/6 after 80 overs. Click here for the detailed scorecard.

# Sam Curran is in at number eight.

# Wicket!! Hardik Pandya moves the ball and Jonny Bairstow, flashes his bat, edges it back to Dinesh Karthik, who dives to his right to take a brilliant catch. The 189-run partnership is finally broken. Jonny Bairstow (93) falls 7-runs short of a century.

# England 308/5 after 73 overs, lead by 201 runs. Click here for the detailed scorecard.

The Indians have turned flat, England are in the driver’s seat. Chris Woakes’ maiden century and a 177-run partnership with Bairstow, who is batting at 92, has put England in command. Nothing seems to be working for India as hosts continue to extend their lead (201 runs). Only Rains can save the tourists at Lord’s.

# The 175-run stand between Woakes and Bairstow becomes the highest sixth-wicket stand for England in Tests against India

Congratulations, @chriswoakes!

He now becomes just the 10th player to claim a spot on both the batting & bowling Honours Boards at Lord’s!

# Century!! What a remarkable day for Chris Woakes. He performed well with the ball, dismissed Kohli and Pandya. And now brings up his maiden Test century. Woakes punches the air in celebration. Woakes in  Lord’s Honours board now.

#England 276/5, lead by 169 runs. Click here for the detailed scorecard.

India need a miracle to turn this match around. Bairstow (79) and Woakes (66) look set for a big score. Woakes’s form also puts England in a selection dilemma for the third Test if Ben Stokes is available. England are in complete control with a 151-run lead. England 258/5.

The players are back and the third session is underway.

# Tea break!

# England 230/5, lead by 123 runs (Jonny Bairstow 62*, Chris Woakes 55* / Mohammed Shami 3/67). Click here for the detailed scorecard.

It is advantage England at Lord’s. Bairstow and Woakes’ 93-run partnerships has put England in the driver’s seat here. They have a competitive lead of 123 runs now, which is 16 runs more than India’s first innings score. Kohli cuts a frustrated figure as India need a miracle to turn this match around. The Indian bowlers toiled hard but Bairstow and Woakes batted India out in the second session.

# Half-century!  Chris Woakes brings up his 5th Test half-century. A hard-fought 50 this by Woakes.

# England 200/5. Click here for the detailed scorecard.

England now lead by 80 runs. Bairstow (51) and Woakes (23) have already had a 56-run partnership and as it stands England still hold the upper hand here. It is slipping away from India. Was Kohli a little too late to bring Ashwin into the attack? Only time will tell. England 187/5 after 46 overs.

# Half-century!! Bairstow drives Kuldeep Yadav through covers to bring up the first half-century of the 2nd Test.

The Indian pace attack has had a great first two sessions. They have consistently bowled at troubling lengths. Shami, was the pick of the Indian bowlers, picking three huge wickets. The angling deliveries are working for India so much so that Ashwin has not bowled a single ball so far. The wicket is assisting pace and is carrying the ball well. However, England are still in a comfortable position and India will have to wrap them for a low score before the end of day’s play. England 142/5 after 35 overs. They lead by 35 runs.

# Chris Woakes is in at number seven.

# England 131/5, lead by 24 runs.

# Wicket!! Buttler’s (24) cameo comes to an end. Shami sticks to the middle and leg stump line and Buttler shuffles forward in an attempt to flick the pitched up delivery over the leg side but the pace beats the batsman and hits him plumb on the pads.

# Jos Buttler is in at number six.

India bowled brilliantly after a steady start. Ishant Sharma got the better of Alastair Cook (21), Hardik Pandya dismissed the set debutant Ollie Pope for 28 runs and Shami sealed the session for India with two crucial wickets of Joe Root (19)  and Keaton Jennings (11).

# Lunch Break!

# England 89/4, trail by 18 runs.

# Wicket!! What a delivery. Shami pitches it short and the ball dips back in to trap Joe Root plumb on front. Huge wicket for India just before the Lunch break. Root goes for a 53-ball 19.

# Jonny Bairstow is in at number five.

# Wicket!! Hardik Pandya rips the ball back from the off stump and it skids on to Ollie Pope’s knee-roll. Pope, who was looking good, departs for 28. England 77/3!

# England 70/2 after 20 overs. Click here for the detailed scorecard.

# Ollie Pope has spent some time in the middle now. He has batted confidently so far. Skipper Virat Kohli, on the other hand, has not introduced Ravichandran Ashwin yet. He is happy to use Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav.

England are off to a shaky but steady start. Kuldeep Yadav is into the attack. It will be interesting to see how the English batsmen tackle the wrist spinner.

# Debutant Ollie Pope is in at number four.

# Wicket!! Ishant Sharma strikes. Sharma creates a difficult angle from around the wicket and gets Cook (21) into an awkward position. Cook opens his shoulders and edges the length delivery back to keeper Dinesh Karthik. Perfect start for India.  England 32/2!

# Joe Root is in at number three.

# Wicket!! Shami makes the first breakthrough for India. He pitches it up and ball skids on trap Jennings plumb on front. Keaton Jennings goes for a review but the impact was in line and the wickets were hitting. Jennings departs for 11. England 28/1.

# England 21/0 after 6 overs. Click here for the detailed scorecard.

The wicket looks good for batting but India could trouble England with swing. However, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma don’t swing the ball as much as the English bowlers. The Indians rely on reverse swing and angling deliveries.

# Keaton Jennings and Alastair Cook will open the innings for England!

It is bright and sunny at the @HomeOfCricket and we will have the third day’s play starting on time. #TeamIndia #ENGvIND pic.twitter.com/sz8psFUiXR

It was Edgbaston all over again as India succumbed to pace and swing on a rain-marred second day. James Anderson got England off to a great start after dismissing both Murali Vijay (0) and KL Rahul (8) early in the innings. Just when India looked like settling in, Cheteshwar Pujara (1) got caught in a mix up with skipper Virat Kohli and the former was run out before heavy rains interrupted the play. The game resumed in the third session and Chris Woakes bowled a dream of a delivery to send off the in-form Virat Kohli for 23.

Playing XI:

India: Murali Vijay, Lokesh Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli(c), Ajinkya Rahane, Dinesh Karthik(w), Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma.
