Under-19 cricket World Cup 2018: Pakistan awarded third place after rain washes…

The third place play-off match of Under-19 cricket World Cup 2018 between Pakistan and Afghanistan was washed out without a ball being bowled at the Queenstown Events Centre on Thursday.

Pakistan were awarded a third place finish as they had finished atop their group, and importantly ahead of Afghanistan, during the league stage.

Heavy overnight rain and a persistent morning drizzle forced the match to be abandoned. Pakistan had topped Group D while Afghanistan were second. While teams had two wins and one loss each, Pakistan had a far better net run rate.

During the semi-finals, Pakistan were thrashed by arch-rivals India by 203 runs at Christchurch on January 30 while Australia had defeated Afghanistan by six wickets a day before on the same ground.

The final will be played between India and Australia in Mount Maunganui on Saturday.
