The Nationalist Congress Party leader was arrested on March 14 last year by the Enforcement Directorate on the charge of bribery and money laundering in the construction of Maharashtra Sadan building in Delhi. 18:23  In 2015, Trump praised Streep as ‘excellent’ :

Donald Trump may now regard Meryl Streep as “overrated” but just over a year ago the President-elect had named her among his favourite actresses and had hailed her as “excellent”.

Streep, an ardent supporter of Trump’s rival Hillary Clinton, slammed the next US President in her scathing speech while accepting the Cecil B DeMille Award at the Golden Globes yesterday.

The three-time Oscar winner took swipes at Trump’s divisive rhetoric without naming him as she cautioned against powerful people using their position to “bully others”.

Responding to Streep’s comments, Trump tweeted, “Meryl Streep, one of the most overrated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a Hillary flunky who lost big.”

Trump’s critical remarks were in sharp contrast to the comments he made in 2015.

Asked during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter if there were any actresses in particular he loved, Trump answered, “Julia Roberts is terrific, and many others. Meryl Streep is excellent; she’s a fine person, too.”

“The problem is I’ll name three or four or five and then the hundred that I know will be insulted, and I don’t mean to insult them,” he had said.

During Streep’s speech yesterday, the actress called out Trump’s recent “performance,” referring to the moment when the president-elect mocked The New York Times‘ Serge Kovaleski, a disabled reporter.

14:49  Puducherry govt told me to be mere figurehead: Kiran Bedi:  In signs of widening rift with Congress government in Puducherry, Lt Governor Kiran Bedi today said that it wants her to be just a “figurehead” though the rules assign her responsibilities of an administrator and made it clear she won’t back down.

Sticking to her announcement about quitting the post on May 29 next year, Bedi said she took the decision as she is discharging her duties for a “cause and not a tenure” and will “set in motion the needed practices” so a “third year may not be needed at all”.

“It (L-G’s role) is of an administrator. And a functioning Lt Governor. Not a figurehead, as they (Congress government) want me to be. For they said so in their last meeting. I told them please read my responsibilities as specified as an administrator,” she told PTI in an interview.

Amid growing differences between her and the Congress government in Puducherry, Bedi had last week said she would quit the post on completion of two years in office.

Asked what prompted her to make the announcement well in advance, Bedi noted she took oath as L-G on May 29 (last year) as it is her mother’s birthday, and said she decided to give this responsibility a similar departure date.

“I said two years because I wanted to let it be known that I am here (as L-G of Puducherry) for a cause and not a tenure, or waiting for extensions. “I will set in motion the needed practices. Third year may not be needed at all. Such a decision gives a sense of urgency to my team and personal freedom to me,” she said. Referring to Puducherry being “in a debt trap”, Bedi said she will take necessary steps for financial prudence.

“Whatever is within my responsibility I shall exercise with maximum financial prudence. Precious resources must go where they are needed most. “Puducherry is in a debt trap. We have to check its further decline,” said Bedi, who was here to attend the valedictory ceremony of the 35th All India Police Equestrian Championship as chief guest.

Deployed along the Indo-Pak border in Jammu and Kashmir, the jawan says that troops are facing cruelty as they are served bad quality food and even have to go on an empty stomach at times.

This prompted Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to order appropriate action.

I have seen a video regarding a BSF jawans plight. I have asked the HS (home secretary) to immediately seek a report from the BSF & take appropriate action, Singh tweeted.

In at least three different videos clocking over four minutes released online, constable T B Yadav, 40, of BSF’s 29th battalion also goes on to show the food that is allegedly being served to him.

We only get a paratha and tea as breakfast and this is without any pickle or vegetables… we slog for 11 hours and at times we have to stand throughout the duty hours. For lunch, we get daal (pulses) which only has haldi (turmeric) and salt… with roti. This is the quality of the food we get … how can a jawan do his duty? I request the Prime Minister to get this probed.

… No one shows our plight, Yadav alleged, adding, It is cruelty and injustice against us.

He said he may not be here hinting action might be taken against him  for shooting and uploading the video a s he urged people to take the issue forward so that corrective action is taken.

The BSF took cognisance of the video and tweeted from its official handle that an inquiry has been ordered.

(The) BSF is highly sensitive to the welfare of tps (troops). Individual aberrations, if any, are enquired into. A senior officer has already rchd (reached) the location, the force tweeted after tagging the video.

A senior BSF official said Yadav is currently deployed along the Line of Control in J&K and the BSF jawans here work under the operational command of the army which also provides for food and other logistics of the jawans.

10:37  Budget: Govt to seek AG’s opinion:  Rajeev Sharma tells us:  The Modi government is likely to seek Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi’s legal opinion on the controversy about the presentation of the Union Budget on February 1, three days before the voting process for five state assemblies begins.

The AG will be asked to give his considered opinion on whether the Union government is well within its rights to choose a date for presentation of the Budget irrespective of external factors like the assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur.

The Congress party has petitioned the Election Commission and President Pranab Mukherjee seeking a directive to the Modi government to present the Budget only after the poll process is over with the counting of votes on March 11.

The Congress party’s argument is that presentation of the Budget before the voting process would influence voters and would thus be violative of the Election Commission’s Model Code of Conduct.

The Modi government’s move to seek the AG’s opinion on the controversial issue is to prepare itself for a legal haul as Opposition parties have already knocked at the Supreme Court’s doors in this context.

09:11   Government advised RBI of note ban day before PM’s announcement:

Contradicting the Modi government, which had asserted that the Reserve Bank of India recommended a ban on Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, the central bank has said that it was the government which advised it to do so, as late as November 7, the day before the note ban was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to a report in The Indian Express, in a submission to a Parliamentary panel late in December, the RBI in a 7-page note said that, “Government, on 7th November, 2016, advised the Reserve Bank that to mitigate the triple problems of counterfeiting, terrorist financing and black money, the Central Board of the Reserve Bank may consider withdrawal of the legal tender status of the notes in high denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.”

Backing the government’s move, the note added that, “Elimination of black money will eliminate the long shadow of the ghost economy and will be positive for India’s growth outlook.”

The RBI Central Board met the very next day (ie November 8) to “consider the government’s advice,” and after “deliberations,” decided to recommend to the central government that the legal tender status of the banknotes in the high denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 be withdrawn, said the note.

Union Minister for Power Piyush Goyal had however claimed on November 16 during a debate on demonetisation in Parliament that the RBI Board of Directors had taken the decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.

08:23  Hotline between PMO and White House to continue post Jan 20:

The hotline established in 2015 between US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi will continue to exist after the outgoing US President hands over the baton to his successor Donald Trump on January 20, a presidential aide has suggested.

It is the only new hotline that was established during the eight years of Obama Administration, reflecting on deepening of India-US ties.

“I’d be surprised if that was something that was discontinued,” said White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest. “Typically, those kinds of arrangements are intended to persist beyond just one presidential term,” he said in response to a question.

The decision to establish the hotline was finalised during Obama’s historic visit to India in 2015 to attend the annual Republic Day parade on January 26 as its chief guest.

Modi had then said the effort was part of their exercise to give the critical partnership between two countries “a new thrust and sustained attention.”

00:12  As UN orders probe, 140 Indian soldiers to be given cholera vaccination in Haiti:  Nearly 140 Indian soldiers, who are part of United Nations peace-keeping force in Haiti, will be administered cholera vaccine after the UN reportedly ordered a probe on how they had landed in the Caribbean country without the mandatory vaccination.

Haiti has been grappling with a cholera outbreak and the UN has been part of massive effort to contain the disease. The Indian soldiers had landed in Haiti in August last year and reportedly India had certified that they were administered the cholera vaccine.

“The India soldiers will be administered the cholera vaccine tomorrow,” a government source said, adding there was some communication on the issue from the UN.

The source said the cost of vaccination will be deducted from the fund allocated by the UN for Indian peacekeepers.

Previous UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon last month had apologised to the people of Haiti for the role played by the UN peacekeepers in sparking the cholera epidemic in the country.

According to several experts, cholera was introduced to Haiti by infected Nepalese UN peacekeepers sent to the Caribbean country after the massive 2010 earthquake. — PTI
