Tamil Nadu is set to experience continued rainfall as two weather systems, an easterly wave and a weather disturbance over the Arabian Sea, are expected to bring light to moderate rain, particularly in the southern region. The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai predicts that a low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea is likely to intensify into a well-marked low-pressure area by Wednesday.
Additionally, a cyclonic circulation off the Sri Lanka coast in the southwest Bay of Bengal may trigger scattered rain of light to moderate intensity over parts of Tamil Nadu from January 6. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) anticipates heavy rain, up to 11.5 cm, in one or two places in the Nilgiris on January 4 and January 5.
While mist or haze may envelop some areas, including Chennai, in the early morning hours on Wednesday, officials suggest that the northeast monsoon’s extension into this year is contributing to the prolonged wet weather. Last year’s annual rainfall in Tamil Nadu exceeded the average by 13%, with the northeast monsoon bringing 4% more rain than usual, particularly favoring districts like Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, and Chennai. The state awaits dry weather conditions for the monsoon’s withdrawal.
