Parliament Security Breach: What Are Gas Canisters Used By Intruders?

In a major security lapse, two persons jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber from the public gallery during Zero Hour, and released yellow gas from canisters, before being overpowered by MPs. Minutes later, a man and a woman were detained while they were protesting outside the Parliament building carrying cans that emitted a yellowish and red smoke. The incidents came on a day when the country is observing the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 Parliament attack.

All four accused have been arrested. Police suspect the involvement of six people in the security breach today and is searching for 2 others, according to official sources.

The two arrested from inside parliament have been identified as Manoranjan D and Sagar Sharma, while Amol Shinde and Neelam were held outside the premises.

After opening the gas canisters that emitted the smoke outside the Parliament building, the two protestors raised slogans such as “Tanashahi Nahi Chalegi” (dictatorship will not be allowed), “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Jai Bheem, Jai Bharat”.

The accused deployed smoke cans or smoke bombs that are often used in sporting events and photoshoots. Such smoke cans are easily available online as well as in retail markets. These devices emit non-hazardous colourful smoke for visual effects.

These smoke bombs are also used in defence operations to provide cover to security personnel. These devices are also often used for marking target zones for airstrikes, troop landings, and evacuation points.

Smoke bombs are also used in photography and parties to create captivating visual effects and illusions. They are also used during sporting events, especially during football games, where fans use smoke canisters to showcase the vibrant colours of their respective clubs.

LS Speaker to Seek Security Review of Parliament

Speaking about the incident of security breach, Om Birla said that the police are investigating the issue and that there was no serious threat.

“We are investigating the matter and have asked Delhi Police to join the inquiry. I have gotten an update on the smoke. There is no serious threat from it. I would like to assure you all of that. I am here too. Sitting here with you all. Let us now wait for more details that surface after the investigation,” he said.

He is also likely to write to the Home Ministry seeking a security review of Parliament. Birla conveyed this to leaders of political parties at a meeting convened to discuss the incident in Lok Sabha when Zero Hour submissions were being made by members, parliamentary sources said.

At the all-party meeting, Trinamool Congress cited the expulsion of its MP Mahua Moitra and demanded action against BJP member Prathap Simha, who had facilitated the entry of at least one person who jumped into the Lok Sabha chamber.

Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the members flagged various lapses in the security set-up during the meeting with the Speaker.
