In Andhra’s Kurnool, Class 4 Girl Defies Odds Practicing Archery After Surgery In Right Hand

Hanvika’s journey took an unexpected turn in 2018 with a second surgery.

Even after the surgery, Hanvika Sri continued practising archery, participating in district, state and national-level competitions in the under-9 category.

The transformation of a child’s hands, once in need of repair, into magnificent instruments of achievement, is a story of resilience and determination. In the heart of the Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, a young prodigy named Hanvika Sri, born to parents Vishnuvardhan and Vani, is leaving an indelible mark in the world of archery at an age when most children are just beginning to discover their talents.

Born into a family with a sporting background, with both parents having excelled in athletics, Hanvika Sri’s journey into archery began under the encouraging gaze of her athletic parents. Despite facing a challenging surgery at the tender age of 4 due to nerve pain in her right hand, her spirit remained unbroken. The initial suspicion of bone cancer only heightened the distress for her parents but subsequent tests dispelled those fears.

Hanvika Sri, currently a fourth-grade student, displayed an early affinity for archery. Even after the surgery, she continued practising archery, participating in district, state and national-level competitions in the under-9 category. Her impressive performances have garnered numerous medals, with a notable achievement being the 30th rank at the national level.

Even the former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu couldn’t help but be impressed by the remarkable talent displayed by this young archer. Hanvika Sri’s journey took an unexpected turn in 2018 with a second surgery, raising concerns about her continued participation in archery. Faced with the challenge, her parents contemplated withdrawing her from the sport. However, fueled by her unwavering persistence and against all odds, Hanvika Sri resumed her archery training, showcasing her skills in district and national-level competitions.

Her dedication to the sport, coupled with continuous practice, has seen her triumph in various competitions, collecting medals and earning admiration.

The city of Kurnool is now home to this rising archery star, who is being trained by private individuals. However, the lack of coaching infrastructure in Kurnool has prompted her parents to appeal to the government for attention and the appointment of coaches locally. Hanvika’s father, Vishnu Vardhan, a constable in the Gadwal district of Telangana, emphasises the need for accessible coaching for his young daughter.

In light of her aspirations to win a gold medal for India at the Olympic Games, Hanvika Sri’s teacher, Babu, and her parents have appealed to the Andhra Pradesh government and potential donors to provide the necessary support.
