The Mumbai cybercrime unit has arrested two boys for tricking several men by changing voices and pretending to be girls similar to what was shown in the Bollywood movie Dream Girl.

According to a Times Now report, the accused made use of various voice-changing techniques to pull the scam and tricked several men into believing that they were women.

The accused also created a fake matrimonial profile by the name Ashwini Manohar Pandit and also projected himself as a Metropolitan magistrate by using forged documents to make it look genuine.

Tricked by the profile, several men approached the accused thinking them to be a potential bride. The accused also used images of a young girl from Nashik.

Recently, a 59-year-old woman fell prey to an AI-generated voice fraud that cost her over Rs 1 lakh. This is nothing but an AI voice fraud which is on the rise these days.

An AI voice scam is a type of fraud that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to generate audio of a person’s voice, making the caller sound like someone the victim knows and trusts. In this case, the accused emulated her nephew from Canada in urgent immediate financial aid.

Earlier this year, TOI reported that India tops the list of victims and 83% of Indians have lost money in these types of scams.

According to a report by McAfee, more than half (69%) of Indians think they don’t know or cannot tell the difference between an AI voice and a real voice.

Furthermore, about half (47%) of Indian adults have experienced or know someone who has experienced some kind of AI voice scam, which is almost double the global average (25%), said the report, titled ‘The Artificial Imposter’.
