Odisha Businessman Forced to Pay Rs 14 Lakh to Unknown Woman After Attending Video Call; Probe Underway

An Odisha-based businessman was extorted of over Rs 14 lakh for receiving a video call. Yes, you read it right. The victim, who is a 55-year-old businessman from Nayapalli received a text message from an unknown woman and after a few hours of chatting, they got on a video call where she shared some nude pictures with the man.

The next thing he knew, the man received a call from someone identifying himself as a police official claiming that the woman lodged a complaint against him for sexual harassment.

According to a Times of India report, the cyber police station, Bhubaneswar, has started an investigation after receiving a complaint from the victim on Sunday.

On October 6, the businessman received a message on WhatsApp from a woman who identified herself as Chandra Shampa. They chatted for some time. The next evening, the woman made a video call to the victim and shared her nude photos, TOI reported.

Three days later, the victim received another call from a man, who introduced himself as Ram Pandey, an IPS officer in Delhi.

Pandey told him that the woman lodged a sexual harassment complaint with the Delhi police against him and shared the number of another man with the victim. Pandey’s aide, who was identified as Manoj, then demanded Rs 92,000 from the victim to settle the dispute with the woman, TOI reported.

Later, the victim received a call from Pandey who told him that the woman had uploaded photos she had clicked during their video call on YouTube and demanded another Rs 71,000.

Pandey called up the complainant and claimed that the woman had killed herself in Bengaluru adding that the businessman would have to pay Rs 4.5 lakh so that the woman’s parents don’t file a murder case against him and another Rs 4.5 lakh for a hospital to tamper the postmortem report of the woman, the TOI report said.

Pandey also demanded an additional Rs 2 lakh from the businessman to keep the media away from the information.
