The occasion was the 1999 World Cup Super Six game between South Africa and Australia. Aussie captain Steve Waugh had walked in with the team struggling at 48/3, chasing 272 to win.
He was batting on 56, when he hit a loose shot straight to Herschelle Gbbs at mid-wicket, who started celebrating pre-maturely, and dropped the catch.
At that moment, Waugh is supposed to have said to him that “How Does it Feel to Drop the World Cup?”
Gibbs had in-fact scored 101 in that game, but that was overpowered by Waugh’s 120, and this famous moment which was etched into cricket history forever.
Australia went onto win the game, and stay alive in the World Cup. In fact, this victory put them over South Africa in the group stage and when the semi-final between the two teams ended on a tie, Australia progressed to the final because it had finished above South Africa in the super six stage.
Waugh remained unbeaten, and was ably supported by Ricky Ponting who scored 69. Australia won by six wickets with two balls to spare.
