TN girl seeking weight loss treatment in Ayurvedic hospital dies, parents allege malpractice

A 17-year-old girl’s desire to lose weight led her to seek treatment at an Ayurvedic hospital, which eventually led to her death in Salem district on Wednesday.

Bhagyasri, a second-year student from Sri Balakrishna Polytechnic College, died after allegedly receiving wrong treatment at Herbocare Ayurvedic Hospital in Erode.

Speaking to The News Minute, Shakthi, Bhagyasri’s father said that the owner of the hospital, Naveen Balaji had promised that he will help his daughter lose weight.

“Last month, we had taken our daughter for treatment, they had treated her for nine days. After which, on June 2, we again went to the hospital and they gave us medicines and asked my daughter to consume it regularly,” he said.

Bhagyasri was overweight and had wheezing problem, said her father. “Otherwise she was perfectly alright. She was going to a regular college to study. But after two days of consuming the medicine, my daughter started fainting and was behaving like a three-year-old,” he said.

After which, they decided to take their daughter to a private hospital. “We informed the doctor that we are taking our daughter to another hospital. He immediately asked us to bring her to Herbocare hospital. We again took her there, they gave her some medicine and my daughter was unconscious for next four days,” said the father.

The parents had to attend a wedding on Thursday early morning, so the doctors told them that they will take care of the girl. “A doctor name Kalpana told us on Wednesday that they will take care of our daughter and asked us to go attend the wedding. I and my wife left for the wedding. I called every half an hour to check on her health. They kept saying she is fine,” he said.

But on Wednesday night, when Bhagyasri’s condition started deteriorating, Herbocare hospital doctors took her to another private hospital without informing her parents.

On Thursday morning, when the father called the doctor around 9 am, he said that Bhagyasri is better and is drinking soup. “We were happy that her condition was improving but after an hour, an ambulance arrived at our house with our daughter’s dead body,” said Shakthi.

However, Naveen Balaji, doctor from Herbocare hospital told reporters, “The girl died around 10:30 pm on Wednesday. We did not inform them thinking that they were attending a wedding on Thursday early morning. We informed the parents about the death around 6 am. The girl was critical on Wednesday that is why we took her to another hospital where they declared her dead. We had given her proper treatment,” he claimed.

A complaint has been filed at the Kavindapadi police station by Bhagyasri’s father Shakthi alleging that the girl died due to wrong treatment. Police said that the case has been filed Section 174 of CrPc (Police to enquire) and an action can only be taken after the post-mortem report is out.
