Amravati MP Navneet Rana to appear before Parliamentary Privileges Committee of Lok Sabha today over `illegal arrest`

Delhi: Amravati MP Navneet Rana will depose before the Parliamentary Privileges Committee of Lok Sabha on Monday regarding her allegation of “patently illegal arrest and the consequent inhuman treatment meted out to her in Khar Police Station, Mumbai.”

Navneet Rana and her husband Ravi Rana had earlier met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on May 9 and discussed the alleged inhuman treatment given to them by the Maharashtra police. 

The independent MP had said that she will depose before the Parliament’s privileges committee about the incident and even wished to raise the matter before Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“Lok Sabha Speaker is the custodian of the MPs… I have appealed to him to ensure justice is delivered in our case and action should be taken against those who are accused. I explained to him the entire incident of my arrest. The Lok Sabha’s privilege committee will take up my complaints on May 23 and I will also give a written statement to the committee,” Amravati MP Navneet Rana had said.

The Rana couple was arrested by Mumbai police on April 23 after they threatened to chant Hanuman Chalisa in front of Uddhav Thackeray’s residence Matoshree.

The Rana couple was granted bail on May 5 by special Judge RN Rokade with certain conditions imposed including refraining from speaking about the matter in public and press.

Earlier, the Lok Sabha Secretariat had via the Ministry of Home Affairs sought a ‘factual note’ from the Maharashtra government over the arrest of Navneet Rana.
