Sarbjeet, a resident of Krishna Nagar colony, said his father Lal Singh, who worked in a local metal factory, had been undergoing treatment for chest infection in the ICU ward of the Shaheed Babu Labh Singh civil hospital since May 7.

He said his father died at 6 pm on Thursday and when he asked for an ambulance, the hospital staff said they had no such facility to carry a dead body.

“When I approached the driver of a private ambulance, he demanded Rs 400, but I had no money to pay. Later, one of my friends brought his cart and we decided to take the body home on the cart,” said.

Medical superintendent Dr Kanwaljit Singh Bawa said the hospital has no ambulance to carry dead bodies. He added that he would talk to the state health minister to provide such facility for poor families.
