IPS officer row: Gorakhpur MLA meets UP CM Yogi Adityanath, presents ‘facts’

Veteran BJP lawmaker from Gorakhpur Radha Mohan Das Agarwal met Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow and discussed the situation arising out of his argument with a woman IPS officer Charu Nigam.

Agarwal was reportedly summoned following a video of additional superintendent of police Charu Nigam in tears after being admonished by Agarwal going viral. Nigam had subsequently made a series of Facebook posts targeting the lawmaker and a successful practising paediatrician too, without naming him.

A defiant Agarwal had also taken to social media to claim that the woman IPS officer had been cruel to a pregnant woman, a child and an elderly who were part of protests against 56 liquor outlets that were operating illegally in Gorakhpur. Nigam had subsequently withdrawn the posts following demands to act against her for violating service rules.

Before meeting Yogi, the lawmaker had staged a sit-in to drum up support for his demand to shut down liquor outlets. The IPS officer had described Agarwal’s sit-in as ‘publicity stunt’.

“The CM heard me. I had gone to meet him with development projects for Gorakhpur that included getting funds for about 28 roads in the city as well as closure of illegal liquor outlets operating there. Yogiji heard me and assured that he would get the issues looked into,” Agarwal told HT.

He said he had not demanded any action against Nigam but merely put up ‘facts’ before the CM.
