IPL updates: KKR kept quiet

23:32  Sandeep Sharma keeps Punjab alive in the competition:

Sandeep Sharma bowls the last over and the fielder at sweeper cover keeps the runs down to just one off the first ball.

A lovely yorker and Woakes gets a single.

Another yorker and the batsmen run two. De Grandhomme is safely home.

Woakes tries to be innovative but the ball goes between the bat and the wickets. 

No run off the last ball and that is just five runs off the over.

Yusuf Pathan does not read the slower ball and gifts a catch to Maxwell.

Mohit does well to keep the batsmen quiet with his slower deiveries.

Manish Pandey fails to get under the full length delivery and Matt Henry gets his first wicket.

Pandey is caught at deep mid-wicket by Axar Patel and KKR in trouble here.

23:04   Pandey, Lynn continue to bat under pressure:

Pacer Sandeep Sharma comes back into the attack.

Lynn gets one run down to mid-wicket. Pandey follows that with another single.

Lynn gets another run down to deep mid-wicket.

Lynn goes big but lucky for him it falls in no man’s land.

Just six singles off the over and the time-out is called.

Lynn clubs Axar over long off and into the stands for a maximum.

He runs a couple after that.

Pandey gets two runs in the deep and good fielding by Mohit Sharma.

12 runs off the over.

Tewatia continues and Lynn is happy to just take a single.

Pandey slams the ball in the air but is fielded by Axar at deep mid-wicket.

A wide ball and the next ball Lynn gets a single down to deep extra cover.

Manish Pandey smashes the ball perfectly to penetrate the on-side field for a boundary.

That is the end of Tewatia’s spell and what a good one it was (2-18)!

Lynn smashes Swapnil through the covers but some great ground fielding by Axar in the deep keeps it down to 2 runs.

Another 2 runs and then he goes for the maximum and gets it with a powerful strike over long-on.

11 come off that over. Finally some bug runs for KKR after a few quiet overs in the middle.

Tewatia continues and just three runs again given away.

Axar gives just three off his next over and keeps the pressure on new man Manish Pandey and Chris Lynn.

The boundaries have dried up here for KKR.

Lynn was nearly run-out there but saved by a bad throw.

Lynn gets to his fifty with a run down to extra cover.

The pressure put by the spinners finally paid off as Gambhir is dismissed for 8 (18).

He goes for a big short for the ball to only go straight down the throat of Marsh at deep mid-wicket.

Robin Uthappa comes in to bat.

And what a catch by Axar Patel at deep mid-wicket to send Uthappa back to the dugout for a golden duck.

Axar goes full length to finish the catch as the ball was dipping on him.

Just three runs and 2 wickets come in that Tewatia over.

Left arm spinner Swapnil Singh comes into the attack.

He nearly gets Gambhir who hits the ball to backward square leg.

Lynn also takes only one run down to long off. Ditto for Gambhir next ball.

Gambhir gets a run down to wide long-on.

Gambhir gets hit on the pad but ball going down to short fine leg and umpire calls leg bye.

Lynn punches the ball down to extra cover and gets another single down to deep mid-wicket.

Axar Patel continues and only 3 runs given in that over.

And that is the signal for a strategic timeout. 

Matt Henry comes back for his second spell.

Gambhir takes a tight run.

Lynn digs out the yorker. 

Lynn plays a tennis shot and bludgeons the ball for a boundary on the off side through deep mid-wicket.

He follows that up with a huge six.

It’s a full toss and it’s been sent over deep square leg for a massive maximum.

Axar Patel brought into the attack and is hammered for a couple of boundaries at get go.

Gambhir gets a leading edge, ball falls safely and he gets off the mark.

22:15  Narine bowled out for 18:  

KKR 39-1 (4 ovs) vs Punjab 167-6 (20 ovs) Scorecard

Mohit Sharma introduced into the attack.

A slower delivery and Narine slaps it over mid-off for a four. 

Another great shot by Narine. Well timed, middle of the bat and beats the fielder at mid-off for a four.

Mohit comes round the wicket and gets the result.

The ball angled into the batsman, Narine misses it completely and the ball crashes into his stumps.

KKR lose first wicket.

Gautam Gambhir comes in to bat at number 3. 

A new over and the same intent, Lynn dispatches Sandeep Sharma for a four straight down to long on.

Sandeep bowls a full toss, Lynn tries to pat it down for a big shot but only reaches the keeper.

Nice yorker but well dug out by Lynn for a run to extra cover.

Just 6 off that over.

22:03  Expensive start for Punjab.:  

KKR 25-0 (2 ovs) vs Punjab 167-6 (20 ovs) Scorecard

It’s Matt Henry’s debut and his first ball goes for a boundary though the slip cordon.

Martin Guptill brilliant fielding on the boundary stops a certain four and restricts the batsmen for 2.

Short and high, Lynn mishits but gets a four down to short fine leg for a boundary.

Narine and Chris Lynn open the innings for KKR.

There is a flurry of misfields and that could cost Punjab dearly eventually.

Sandeep Sharma opens the bowling for Punjab.

And the first ball is caressed through the covers for a boundary by Narine.

He follows that with a pounding of the ball over extra cover.

Sandeep comes back well with a yorker that is well dug out by Narine.

Narine tries to chip the ball over the in field gets only a single. 

Lynn makes room and slams it for his opening boundary through mid-off.

He ends the over with a single.

Expensive start for Punjab.

21:42  Tewatia’s rear-guard props Punjab:  

Thanks to Tewatia’s late onslaught, Punjab have managed to get to a decent enough total.

Punjab have batted well in bits and pieces to get to 167 for 6.

KKR will have to bat staunchly to get past the mark here.

Rajpoot given the responsibility to bowl the final over of the Punjab innings.

Tewatia gets an inside edge down to square leg for a single.

Axar gets a single.

Two more singles after that and one’s a leg bye. Rajpoot appeals, umpire signals leg bye.

Tewatia picks the ball and sends it to the square leg boundary.

Good delivery to end the over. Tewatia digs out the yorker and takes one run.

9 runs off the over and a good effort by Rajpoot in the final over.

Woakes comes into the attack and strikes! 

Swapnil Singh tries to go big but is cramped and gets a bottom edge and chops the ball on the stumps.  

New man Tewatia hits on the up and the ball goes for a four on the off side.

Tewatia follows the ball and swats his for a boundary to short fine leg.

Tewatia digs out the yorker and ten runs off the over.

Kuldeep continues and Axar swings his arms and one run in front of mid-wicket.

Saha also gets one run,

Axar times the ball well but gets only one. 

Saha sends the ball sailing over the long on fielder for a maximum.

He follows that up with an easy couple.

Saha tries to after Kuldeep, goes down the wicket, misses the ball and is stumped by Uthappa for 38.

Wide ball, Swapnil Singh chases it and gets a run to long off.

14 runs and a wicket comes in that over.

Narine bowling his last over and giving nothing away. Just 6 runs come off the over.

21:17  Punjab have a big task on hand:  

Maxwell welcomes Kuldeep for the next over with a couple of big sixes over long on.

But Chris Woakes’s superb running catch on the off side boundary brings Maxwell’s 44-run innings to an end.

The ball was badly timed and that sealed Maxwell’s fate.

Axar Patel comes in to bat.

He blocks the first ball.

13 runs and a wicket come off that over.

Narine brought back into the attack.

Saha takes a run to bring up the 50-run partnership with Maxwell.

Maxwell gets a run through square.

Saha waits on the ball, makes room and rips the ball through short extra cover for a boundary.

Saha takes a run to mid-wciket.

Maxwell then runs two fast runs down to mid-wicket.

Maxwell ends the over with a run down to backward square leg.

21:05  Punjab pile it on:  

Spinner Kuldeep Yadav comes back into the attack and the batsmen are running well here.

They take 8 runs off Kuldeep’s over that also saw a run-out decision against Saha turned down by the third umpire and that is time-out called by the umpire. 

Rajpoot into the attack and Saha dispatches his bouncer for a four over the keeper’s head.

Maxwell joins the party with flat-batted four at mid-wicket.

11 off the over and Punjab are piling it on.

Maxwell finally goes after the bowling. He slaps De Grandhomme for a couple of sixes and 19 runs come off it.

20:51  Punjab in a spot of bother:  

Maxwell pushes the Woakes ball for a quick run to mid-wicket.

A short ball, big bounce but Saha cannot reach it and the ball lands in the keeper’s hands.

Chris Lynn diving and a good fielding effort on view. A certain boundary saved a mid-wicket.

Saha gets one bye.

Maxwell not allowed to swing his arms here and just 4 runs off the over.

De Grandhomme continues and wide called by the umpire.

The batsmen get two easy singles.

Maxwell tries to be wristy but no success.

He whips the next ball off his pads for a couple down to backward square leg.

And that is followed by a run down to mid-wicket.

Six runs off the over.

20:41  Marsh gone for 11:  

Captain Maxwell joins Saha in the middle.

Woakes bowling a good length here and Maxwell gets off the mark with a shot down to third man.

Marsh’s march brought to an end. Chris Woakes rips his stumps apart to reduce Punjab to 56 for 3. 

The umpire signals a time-out with Punjab in a spot of bother.

De Grandhomme gets his second spell.

Saha dot ball to backward point.

He gets a run through sweeper cover.

Marsh takes a swipe and misses.

He then gets an inside edge and the ball runs through the fine leg boundary.

The next delivery, Marsh punches it down the ground for a beautiful boundary down to long on.

Shaun Marsh is joined by Saha in the middle as Chris Woakes gets the ball.

The batsmen rotate the strike here and have taken 4 singles in this over.

20:27  Openers Vohra, Guptill gone:  

Narine continues as Shaun Marsh and Guptill will look to settle the batting in the middle overs here.

This time Narine strikes!

Guptill looks to sweep, goes across the stumps and the ball hits on the pads in line with the stumps and umpire Ravi raises his finger.

Guptill gone for 12 off 16.

2 runs and wicket off the over.

Vohra gone! The ball grazes his glove and goes to the keeper’s hands. Questioned asked and the umpire raises his finger.

Vohra out for 25.

11 and a wicket off that over.

A bouncer by Umesh and the umpire calls it wide.

Vohra picks the slower one and slams the ball for a boundary through mid-wicket.

Vohra goes after Umesh again, this time heaves and the ball goes to the square boundary.

Vohra takes a heave and gets 2 runs through mid-wicket.

Sunil Narine gets the ball

What timing!

Vohra picks the width and that is four through covers.

Vohra opens the face of the bat and places the ball down to the third man boundary.

Vohra now whips it for a single to mid-wicket.

Guptill is hit on the pads, a loud shout but the umpire is not interested.

9 come off the over.

Umesh Yadav continues and Vohra opens his blade and sends the ball wide of the slips for a couple.

That is followed by a wide by Umesh. 

The batsmen keep the scorecard ticking with singles and they take 8 runs off Umesh’s 2nd over.

20:10  Kolkata to win toss, invite Punjab to bat:  

Colin de Grandhomme is Umesh’s bowling partner. 

Vohra opens his account with whip off his hips to backward square.

Guptill pushes the next ball straight down the ground for a single.

Vohra gets another single off his hips. 

That is 3 runs off the over.

Martin Guptill opens the batting for Punjab with Manan Vohra.

Umesh Yadav gets some good shape off the opening ball and that ball has been sent for a couple of runs off Guptill’s blade.

Play and a miss ! Peach of a delivery! 

Guptill whips the ball off his hips for a four through fine leg. First boundary of the night at Mohali. 

A bouncer now and well evaded.

A crisp push through covers gives Guptill another 2 runs and that makes it 8 off the opening over.

KKR have won the toss and elected to field.

Having sealed their play-offs spot after a resounding victory in their previous match, Kolkata Knight Riders would be aiming for a top-two finish with a win when they take on an inconsistent Kings XI Punjab in their Indian Premier League match, in Mohali,

The Gautam Gambhir-led side are second in the league table with 16 points from 12 matches with the help of eight wins and they would look to consolidate their position with a win over Punjab, who suffered a six-wicket loss against Gujarat Lions.

Glenn Maxwell-led Punjab, on the other hand, have a slender chance to make it to the play-offs as they have only five wins from 11 matches and are placed at the fifth spot with 10 points. They need to win all their remaining three matches and also hope other results go their way if they have to progress to the play-offs. Howver, it will be easier said than done, as Punjab face formidable Mumbai Indians and Rising Pune Supergiant in their last two games.
