A Gurgaon student in Kota was stabbed to death when he tried to stop a couple from quarrelling at a deserted location in Garh Palace Fort, police said on Tuesday.
Police said 22-year-old Anil Bamal from Gurgaon was stabbed in the chest. Bamal, a resident of Tekchand Nagar in Gurgaon’s Sector 104, had appeared for national eligibility-cum-entrance test (NEET) on Sunday at an examination centre in Jaipur.
Police identified the man who allegedly stabbed Bamal as Lalit Kahar, 20. He fled with the girl after stabbing Bamal, but was later arrested, police said. Kahar worked with a DJ team that performs at weddings, police added.
Rajesh Meshram, deputy superintendent of police, Kota City, said Bamal had gone to the fort with three friends when they spotted the quarrelling couple.
“After Bamal was stabbed, his friends rushed him to hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival,” said Meshram.
Bamal’s post-mortem was done at Kota government hospital mortuary after his father, Karamveer Jat, 53, brother, Milan Jat, 24, and other relatives arrived. Bamal’s father runs an auto parts workshop in Gurgaon.
Milan said his younger brother lived in a rented accommodation in Kota’s Rangbari and had been pursuing coaching for medical entrance examinations for four years. Bamal had completed his schooling from Kota. “My brother was about to leave Kota on May 11 as he was hopeful of getting selected in this year’s NEET,” said Milan. After appearing in the NEET exam on Sunday, Bamal had returned to Kota to collect his belongings.
This is not the first instance of a student from outside being killed in Kota, known as Rajasthan’s coaching hub for engineering and medical aspirants. A student from Bihar, Satya Prakash, 19, was murdered on May 12 last year by a mob. Police arrested several of the accused, also students, in the case.
Nearly 1.5 lakh students from across the country take coaching for JEE and NEET in Kota every year.
