Death toll in Maharashtra floods rises to 149, 64 missing; CM Uddhav Thackeray visits affected areas

The death toll from floods in Maharashtra and other rain-related incidents in the state has risen to 149 as Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday announced that various NDRF-style mechanisms will be set up in all affected districts. The toll increased after 36 bodies were found in Satara and Raigad districts. 

“Considering the repeated occurrence of these disasters, a system on the lines of the NDRF will be created in all the affected districts. The SDRF will be further strengthened,” the CMO Maharashtra said after Thackeray’s visit to flood-hit Chiplun. 

The state government said that at least 64 people were missing in the rain-related incidents while 50 have been injured. Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray said that a financial review of the damage from the floods in Maharashtra will be carried out in a couple of days.  

The Maharashtra CMO added, “We will also put a flood control system in place to ensure that such incidents do not happen in the future.”  

The state government said 60 deaths were so far reported in Raigad, 21 in Ratnagiri, 41 in Satara, 12 in Thane, seven in Kolhapur, four in suburban Mumbai, and two each in Sindhudurg and Pune. 

A statement from state secretariat said a total of 875 villages in Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and Pune were affected by the torrential rains in Maharashtra.  total of 2,29,074 people have been evacuated from the affected districts in Maharashtra to safer places. 

Uddhav Thackeray will visit western Maharashtra today to assess the damage from the rains.
