Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua on high alert after 3 people hijack car, rob driver

A high alert was sounded in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir after three people hijacked a Tavera car on the Jammu-Pathankot highway after hiring it from Jammu on pretext of going to Kathua.

A police officer said, “At Chadwal  Morh on the Jammu-Pathankot highway the three overpowered the Tavera driver, Kabir Hussain, tied him up and robbed him off his mobile and money before fleeing away with the vehicle. The incident occurred at around 2am on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday.”

He added that a high alert was sounded immediately and a search operation was also launched to trace the vehicle.

Preliminary investigations suggested that the three men are from Rajouri as they were reportedly conversing in the local language. They were headed towards the border in Kathua. It is learnt that they were seen without any luggage or arms.

After searches the car was found abandoned in Phallian Mandal area of Jammu. However, the whereabout of the hijackers is yet unknown.

AK-47, magazine stolen from cop’s house in Rajouri

A high alert was sounded in the border district of Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday following theft of an AK-47 rifle and a magazine from the rented apartment of a policeman.

The policeman, Shahid Anwar, a personal security officer with munsiff Judge in Rajouri has been suspended.

“He had gone to Jammu with his wife and had kept the AK-47 and three magazines at his rented accommodation. The rifle with one AK magazine was stolen but two magazines were found intact in a box in his house. We are conducting searches to recover the weapons and magazine,” said a police officer.

Earlier this month, a large cache of arms and ammunition, including 35 assorted rifles belonging to the police went missing in south Kashmir.

Among the arms and ammunition that are still untraced are 21 INSAS rifles, 12 SLR rifles, two AK-47 rifles, one Light Machine Gun and three Carbine Machine Guns.

Incidents of gun snatching are notorious in the Valley, as several cases have been reported of terrorists or gunmen barging into police stations and wresting the weapons from the personnel.
