Jaipur: An all-women unit of Jaipur Police will now patrol the Pink City’s streets on two-wheelers to prevent crimes against women.

Armed with customised batons, first-aid kits, search lights and communication equipment connected to local police stations, the police control room and PCR vans, 26 teams of two policewomen each will patrol areas frequented by women and girls on scooters, police commissioner Sanjay Agrawal said.

The formation of the ‘Lady Patrolling Unit’ comes after Uttar Pradesh’s Anti-Romeo Squad to deal with instances of sexual harassment and molestation of women. However, the police commissioner said that it has nothing to do with the UP initiative.

“The aim of the initiative is to help women and girls in distress,” Agrawal said.

Nodal officer Kamal Shekhawat said that close to 200 places have been initially identified where the teams will be deployed.

“Such places include locations of schools, colleges and institutes, as well as other places where the footfall of women and girls is higher,” she said.

Udaipur was the first to launch an all-women patrolling wing in the state, which was flagged off by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje in October last year.

The police commissioner flagged off the Jaipur unit at the commissionerate here in the presence of representatives of a two-wheeler company which has donated 26 scooters for the purpose.
