West Bengal Assembly Election 2021: People come out in huge numbers to caste their votes

In the West Bengal Assembly Election 2021, the sixth phase of voting is underway. Voter turnout in West Bengal climbed up to 79.09% at 5 pm on Thursday, as per the data put out by the Election Commission of India.

The sixth phase of polls kicked off in West Bengal at 7 am on Thursday. Polling is being conducted at 14,480 polling stations in 43 Assembly constituencies across parts of North 24 Parganas, Nadia, Uttar Dinajpur, and Purba Bardhaman.

This phase is witnessing over 1 crore voters exercising their franchise to decide the fate of 306 candidates among which 27 candidates are female.

For the 6th phase of polls, both the Trinamool Congress and the BJP have pitched hard to gain the confidence of Matuas, who make for a large chunk of the state’s Scheduled Caste population, in most of the 17 Assembly segments going to polls in this phase.

Assembly polls have been held in 180 constituencies so far, and the remaining 114 seats are set to go to polls between 22 and 29 April. The counting of votes will happen on May 2. 

The sixth phase of polling is being held in the midst of an unprecedented COVID-19 surge. West Bengal registered its highest-ever single-day spike, with 9,819 people testing positive. A total of 2.95 lakh COVID-19 cases and 2,023 deaths were recorded in the country in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, today said he will skip his visit to poll-bound West Bengal on Friday as he would be chairing a high-level meeting on the prevailing COVID-19 situation in the country.
