TN police collect Rs 25.9 lakh fine from those violating COVID-19 norms

The police have made these collections in a total of 6,465 cases registered between April 8 and April 11 across the state.

The Tamil Nadu police have collected Rs 25,90,000 as fines in connection with the violation of physical distancing and COVID-19 norms across the state. The police have made these collections in a total of 6,465 cases registered between April 8 and April 11 across the state. On April 11 alone, 1,796 cases were registered and an amount of Rs 8,51,800 was collected from violators.

Most cases were registered in the North Zone of the state. On April 11, 547 cases were registered against those violating physical distancing norms. Since April 8, a total of 2742 cases have been registered by the police. From the North Zone, from April 8 to April 11, Rs 8,21,400 was collected from offenders.

In the Central Zone, 334 new cases against violators took the total number of cases from April 8 to 11 to 1571. From the Central Zone, the police have collected Rs 7,36,300 in fines from April 8 to 11.

In West Zone, a total of 647 cases have been registered and a total of Rs 3,01,700 have been collected as fines over the four days. The state’s South Zone accounted for 958 cases and Rs 4,57,100 in fines. From cities, except Chennai, Rs 2,73,500 was collected as fines in 547 cases registered by the police.

The Tamil Nadu government had on April 8 brought in a set of fresh restrictions in the state due to increasing COVID-19 cases. The number of people at weddings has been restricted to 100 and 50 at funerals. Restaurants and movie theatres have been allowed to have only 50% capacity. In addition to wearing masks and hand sanitising, only 50% capacity of customers has been allowed in grocery stores, shopping malls and other establishments. All shops must close by 11 pm, the new guidelines stated.

On Sunday, Tamil Nadu recorded over 6,000 coronavirus infections on a single day, after a gap of nearly seven months, pushing the total caseload to 9.33 lakh. The toll due to COVID-19 rose to 12,908 with 22 more fatalities, the health department said on Sunday According to a medical bulletin on Sunday, recoveries mounted to 8,78,571, with 2,314 patients being discharged, leaving 41,955 active infections. The aggregate touched 9,33,434 with 6,618 new cases being reported. Chennai accounted for most of the new infections with 2,124 cases, taking the aggregate to 2,65,126. The metropolis also leads in the number of fatalities with 4,324.
