A guy threatened to hang himself if his girlfriend dumped him. What happened next is beyond tragic…

In a shocking case of a prank gone wrong, a 21-year-old Mira Road resident while pretending to hang himself on the ceiling fan led to his death in front of his girlfriend. The family members suspect a foul play in the incident as the Kashimira police is conducting a post-mortem with the help of experts from JJ hospital.

Sanmit Rane,21 was completing his graduation in Bachelor of Management Studies and was the only son to Swati Rane, a beautician and Kishore Rane, father and an employee of a private firm. Sanmit had celebrated his new year at Goa and was happy after he had purchased a car to start his own transport business.

According to Kashimira police, Swati Rane, mother of Sanmit found him lying on the floor in the hall of the apartment as she alerted other residents about the incident. The girlfriend of the deceased was the first to arrive near the body and later called out her friend to inform that Sanmit had hanged himself and was not moving when the friend arrived at the residence and cut off the dupatta and kept his body on the floor.

“Prima facie we have been told by the girl that the deceased was mocking her and was teasing that he will end his life if the girl dumped her and in order to show her the way he will hang himself he went to the hall and by using the dupatta hanged himself leading to his death”, said Vilas Sanap, in-charge, Kashimira police station.

“We will be taking the formal statements of the girl and the family members of the deceased and we are awaiting the post mortem reports from JJ hospital”, said Sanap. “The girl was present at the residence when the deceased was pretending to hang self but we will be ascertaining the reports and further investigations would be conducted”, said Sanap. Alleging foul play in the incident, Swati Rane, mother of the deceased said, “If the girl saw that my son had died she could have waited instead of running away from the residence which is very suspicious.”

“Moreover she was the first person to be near the body and she could have informed the family members about the incident first rather than calling a friend and bringing down the body and we have clearly informed the police to register a case of murder”, said Rane.
