225 children test COVID-19 positive in Maharashtra school

In a shocking incident, as many as 225 children from a tribal school in Maharashtra’s Washim Degaon have been found COVID-19 positive. Along with the kids, four teachers have also tested positive for the virus.

A total of 327 students study in the school, which is specifically for tribal children. It is like a hostel for them as they study as well as live there.

After the news came to light, the entire school was converted into a containment zone.

Out of the students that were found infected include 151 are from the Amravati area, 55 from Yavatmal, 11 from Washim, 3 from Buldhana, 8 from Hingoli, and one from Akola. All these students joined school from February 14.

The remaining children and teachers are also being monitored.

This comes as Maharashtra reported 8,807 new COVID-19 cases and 80 deaths on Wednesday, as per the state health department.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the state reached 21,21,119 with the addition of new cases.

A total of 51,937 have succumbed to the virus till now, the department informed.20,08,623 patients have recovered from the virus in the state as of today while the number of active cases stands at 59,358.

It may be noted that in wake of the rising COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, fresh restrictions and curbs have been imposed in several districts and cities in the state.

Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday (February 21), announced that all political, religious, and social gatherings will be prohibited in the state from Monday (February 22), amid rising COVID-19 cases

In a video address, CM Thackeray said, “Do you want lockdown? The next eight days will decide. Maharashtra has reported around 7,000 COVID cases today. If the COVID-19 situation deteriorates, then we have to impose lockdown. Those who want a lockdown can roam around without mask while those who do not want it must wear a mask and follow all the rules.”With reference to the state government’s campaign against COVID-19 “my family, my responsibility.”
