Watch: Delhi Police personnel forced to jump 15-foot wall at Red Fort to escape farmers

Thousands of  farmers protesting against the farm laws on Tuesday overwhelmed the police and stormed into the historic Red Fort complex in New Delhi after tearing down barricades and driving tractors through roadblocks. Police fired tear gas in an unsuccessful bid to force the protesters back. One protester was killed and the Delhi police said 86 officers had been injured across the city.

In one shocking video shared by news agency ANI, around a dozen police and paramilitary personnel can be seen forced to jump over a 15-foot wall at the Red Fort complex to escape a mob. In the video, the police personnel are seen being thrashed with lathis and sticks, and backed against the edge of a rampart.

As the attackers rush in, some of them are forced to throw themselves over the metal railing to drop at least 15 feet to the grassy knoll below. Others cling on and try to fight back.

Then two tractors then appear, one of which is driven right up against the railing, which seems to break and cause a policeman holding on to it to fall to the ground below. As the video continues more and more attackers appear, waving yellow flags and throwing objects. The video then zooms out to show chaos at other ramparts.

The government ordered internet services in some parts of the capital to be blocked in an attempt to prevent further unrest.

The farmers began the day in a convoy of tractors festooned with Indian and union flags along the national capital’s fringes. But hundreds of protesters – some on horseback – broke away from approved routes, heading for government buildings in the city centre where the annual Republic Day parade of troops and military hardware was taking place. They commandeered cranes and used ropes to tear down roadblocks, forcing constables in riot gear to give way, Reuters witnesses said. A second group rode tractors to a traffic junction, also breaching barricades after clashes with police.

Thepolice accused those who diverged from the agreed routes of “violence and destruction”. “They have caused great damage to public property and many police personnel have also been injured,” a police statement said.
