5 dead in fire at Serum Institute, rescue operations on

Five charred bodies were recovered from the Serum Institute of India building where fire broke out on Thursday afternoon, a fire official said. Serum Institute of India CEO, Adar Poonawalla has condoled the deaths.

“We have just received some distressing updates; upon further investigation we have learnt that there has unfortunately been some loss of life at the incident. We are deeply saddened and offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the departed,” SII CEO Adar Poonawalla tweeted condoling the deaths.

A major fire broke out at a building inside Terminal Gate 1 of the Serum Institute of India (SII) in Maharashtra’s Pune on Thursday afternoon. The fire broke out at a plant of the Serum Institute in Manjri area of Pune. Efforts are on to put out the blaze and as many as 10 fire tenders have been rushed to the spot.

One team of the National Disaster Response Force has also been rushed to control the fire that broke out at around 2.45 pm. The cause of the fire at the Serum Institute plant is yet to be known.
