National Medical Council formed, AIIMS ENT Dr Suresh Chandra Sharma appointed president

With the release of notification in the Gazette of India, the National Medical Commission was formed on Friday. The commission will replace the Medical Council of India (MCI). Prof. of ENT department of AIIMS. Dr, Suresh Chandra Sharma has been appointed as the first Chairman of the National Medical Commission. The President of the commission will be in office for three years or until he attains the age of 70 years. 

The central government has appointed Rakesh Kumar Vats, general secretary of MCI’s governing board, as secretary of NMC for the same period.

NMC is the new medical education regulator, which will replace the Medical Council of India (MCI). In the year 2018, it was decided to dissolve MCI. The National Medical Commission Act, 2019 was approved in August 2019. Accordingly, the NMC will have a Chairman, 10 ex-officio members, and 22 part-time members. The formation of the National Medical Commission is aimed at accessing quality and affordable medical education. Besides, it will ensure the availability of adequate and high-quality medical professionals in all parts of the country and other things.
