Kolkata cabbie who harassed, stalked TMC MP Mimi Chakraborty arrested:Cops

A taxi driver was arrested in Kolkata on Tuesday on charges of obscene behaviour and sexual harassment alleged by Mimi Chakraborty, a popular actor of Bengali cinema and Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member from Jadavpur, the night before.

Deba Yadav, 32, the taxi driver was arrested from the Anandapur area in south Kolkata and charged under Sections 354 (outrage of modesty), 354 A (sexual harassment) 354 D (stalking) and 509 (use of obscene word or gesture) of the Indian Penal Code, said an officer of the Gariahat police station where the complaint was registered.

Chakraborty alleged that when she was travelling in her car near Ballygunge Phari in south Kolkata, the driver of a taxi which was moving alongside made obscene remarks and gestures towards her. “The driver had been drinking as well,” she told the media.

The taxi driver followed her car, Chakraborty alleged, and she asked her driver to block the path of the vehicle but it got away.

“I immediately called up the Gariahat police station and the police promptly registered an FIR. I had to take action because this man poses danger for women who feel that travelling in a taxi at night is safe,” Chakraborty said.

Yadav was produced in court and remanded to police custody.
