The Madras HC had ordered his arrest after his claims were found to be false.
A man who claimed to be the son of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was arrested by the police’s Central Crime Branch on Friday from the Dindigul bus terminus.
28-year-old J Krishnamurthy’s arrest comes more than 10 days after the Madras High Court directed the police to do so. He had approached the court claiming he was the ‘real son’ of Jayalalithaa and late Telugu actor Shoban Babu was entitled to her properties and had also sought police protection. After a police investigation found his claims to be false, the High Court had on March 27 directed the police to arrest and produce him before April 10.
In a bid to evade arrest, Krishnamurthy travelled across the state on government buses, reported A Selvaraj for The Times of India.
He was arrested after the police traced his cell phone locations.
“We have been following Krishnamurthy by tracking mobile tower locations. We missed him narrowly to apprehend him in Tiruvannamalai, Vaniyambadi and Karur. Later, one of the teams nabbed him at Dindigul. We kept on sending his photograph to all the district superintendents of police to trace him, however, he missed narrowly,” an investigation officer told TOI.
Krishnamurthy was brought to Chennai by the police on Friday night itself and was produced before a metropolitan magistrate court in Egmore, the TOI report said.
Krishnamurthy, who is a resident of Erode, filed a writ petition before the Madras High Court in March, claiming that he was the only son of the late chief minister. Claiming that he lives with his adopted parents, he went on to say that in his petition that ‘his mother’ had planned to introduce him to the public as her son between 14-18 September. Sasikala, allegedly was against this move and quarrelled with Jayalalithaa against it. The late CM, he says, was then admitted to the hospital on 22 September. In his petition, Krishnamurthy goes on to allege that he was not allowed to participate in the funeral.
But a police investigation found that his biological parents were based in Tiruppur and his claim was false including the documents supporting his claim, reports said. The court had ordered his arrest after the police report was submitted in the court.
“The petitioner, who is son of Krishnamurthy and Vasanthamani and not the alleged son as falsely claimed by him. It is also alleged that old stamp papers were purchased from one Subramanian, a stamp vendor and fabricated and the name of former chief minister was written as Komalavalli alias Jayalalithaa. Only with an ulterior motive that the petitioner came to this court. The report filed by police is placed on record. Police are directed to secure the person connected thereto and proceed in accordance with law and report before this court on April 10, 2017,” the CCB report said.
