A highly-radicalized terrorist linked to the Khalistan movement was on Saturday night arrested by the Punjab Police from Meerut, with additional assistance from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Uttar Pradesh. According to police sources, the 32-year-old individual has been identified as one Tirath Singh. The ATS has also recovered incriminating posters of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and other suspicious material at his residence.
Tirath Singh had been staying at the Thaparnagar area under the Sadar Bazar police station in Meerut. As per police sources, he was associated with the Khalistan movement on social media for quite a long while. The cops, intent on busting this circle, tracked him down and had him apprehended.
The Punjab Police had provided information about him to the UP ATS. It has been learned that Singh was booked by Mohali Police under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in January, earlier this year.
Singh is currently being questioned by the police for further details regarding other associates of the movement.
The Khalistan movement is a Sikh separatist movement seeking to create a homeland for Sikhs by establishing a sovereign state, called Khalistān (‘Land of the Khalsa’), in the Punjab region. Over the years, several militant and terror outfits, sympathetic to the cause, have been apprehended by the Punjab Police.
Chief Minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh has also gone on record to claim that the recent extremism regarding the Khalistan movement is backed by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and “Khalistani sympathizers” in Canada, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
