80% train journeys post resumption undertaken by migrant labourers from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar: Railways

The Ministry of Railways on Saturday stated that more than 2600 special trains have run till date, more than 35 Lakh migrants have availed the benefits of these trains.

“80% of the train journeys have been undertaken by the migrant labourers of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar,” Railway Board Chairman Vinod Kumar Yadav said.

“Shramik Special Trains were started on 1st May. Free meals & drinking water being provided to all the passengers. Social distancing & hygiene protocols being followed in trains & stations,” he added.

In a press conference, the Railway Ministry provided with details of number of passengers Shramik Special trains carried each day.

It further informed that it started special passenger trains since 12 May to carry passengers from Delhi to 15 major cities.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways also brought to the attention of the media its contribution towards the health care infrastructure in tackling the coronavirus pandemic.

“Ministry of Railways has contributed immensely in the effort to domestically produce Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) and sanitisers and produced 1.2 lakh Coveralls and 1.4 lakh litres sanitiser,” it stated.

“We had converted 5,000 coaches into COVID care centres, with 80,000 beds. Since some of these were not being used right now, we used 50% of these coaches for Shramik special trains. If needed, they will be used again for COVID care,” it added.

The ministry informed that during the period of lockdown, 9.7 million tonnes of food grain delivery was ensured by Ministry of Railways between April 1 and May 22.

It further informed that 2600 trains have been scheduled for next 10 days.

After the end of the fourth phase of the lockdown, Indian Railways has decided that passenger train services should be partially restored with 200 train journeys to commence from June 1.

These new trains will be plying in addition to the shramik special trains and air-conditioned special trains which are carrying passengers from Delhi to 15 major cities.

It is to be noted that the passengers need to book their tickets online through the IRCTC website or through Mobile App. The booking will start from 10 am on May 21, 2020.

No tickets will be booked across the reservation counter on any railway Station.

These will be fully reserved trains having both AC & Non AC classes. General (GS) coaches shall also have reserved seats for sitting. There will be no unreserved coach in the train.

Fare shall be as normal and for General (GS) coaches, being reserved, second seating(2S) fare shall be charged and seat will be provided to all the passengers.
