J-K: One policeman killed, 14 injured in grenade attack in Srinagar

One policeman was killed and 14 injured on Sunday in a grenade attack by militants in old Srinagar’s Nowhatta area.

The slain policemen has been identified as Shamim Ahmad from North Kashmir’s Gurez area. Four CRPF jawans are among those injured.

Militants hurled the grenade at a police party next to Ganjbaksh Park in Nowhatta area around 7 pm when the police personnel were withdrawing after their day’s duties. Kashmir was observing a shutdown for the day because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to inaugurate India’s largest road tunnel — the Chenani-Nashri tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar highway.

He said 14 policemen were injured in th grenade blast. The injured cops were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Earlier in the day, stone-throwing incidents were also reported in the area.

This is the second attack in two days. On Saturday, militants had attacked an army convoy in Srinagar’s Bemina area injuring three jawans.

Banned militant organisation Tehreeq-ul-Mujahideen has accepted the responsibility of the attack in a mailed press release to various news organisations. The organisation claimed its “special squad attacked CRPF and claimed that Kashmir police was not their target’’.
