Rajinikanth hasn’t endorsed anyone for TN local body polls, says team Rajini

Actor Rajinikanth’s political outfit, the Rajini Makkal Mandram, has said that the star has not endorsed anyone ahead of the local body elections in the state. Polls for rural local bodies in Tamil Nadu are due to be held in two phases on December 27 and 30. The actor-turned-politician’s political outfit, the Rajini Makkal Mandram, said legal action would be taken against those who claim they have Rajinikanth’s support.

In a statement to the press, administrator of the outfit, VM Sudhakar said, “Our beloved leader Rajinikanth has not given his support to anyone ahead of the local body elections that are due in Tamil Nadu. Therefore, if anyone canvasses for votes using the name of Rajini Makkal Mandram, Rajini Fan Club, the flag of Rajini Makkal Mandram, the symbol, name or photograph of our leader, legal action will be taken.”

The actor, who announced his political entry in December 2017, is yet to launch his political party. As anticipation grew regarding his political career, he chose not to contest in the state Assembly bye-elections or the Lok Sabha polls that took place in summer 2019.

Once again, ahead of the long-pending local body polls, questions regarding his political plunge have surfaced. In November this year, when asked whether he had plans to join the national ruling party, he said that attempts to saffronise him would not work. His comments came in the wake of the controversy over BJP’s alleged attempts to saffronise Tamil poet Thiruvalluvar. On November 2, BJP’s Tamil Nadu wing had tweeted a picture of Thiruvalluvar wearing saffron robes, sparking protests from Dravidian groups.

Meanwhile the actor’s next film, Darbar, is set to release in January, around Pongal. Directed by AR Murugadoss, the film will see Rajinikanth reprise the role of a police officer after almost 25 years. The film is bankrolled by Lyca Productions.
