‘My sisters, seize power from men’: Priyanka Gandhi’s clarion call to women

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Friday said that it is the government’s duty to keep the law and order functional, referring to the minimal development of proceedings in cases of crime against women in Uttar Pradesh (UP). Gandhi, who is the general secretary of the All India Congress Committee in charge of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, also gave a clarion call to women, encouraging them to assume more positions of power.

“More women should be in positions of power. I ask all my sisters to seize power from the men – contest elections for the Panchayat, Vidhan Sabha, fight for the power that should be yours,” Priyanka Gandhi declared.

Gandhi, who was in Lucknow to hold a Strategic Committee Meeting with the state Congress unit and also to review the work of the party’s student wing, said, “Sarkaar ko nirnay lena padega ki woh mahilaon ke paksh mein hai ya apradhiyon ke paksh mein (The government has to decide if it is in favour of women or in the favour of criminals)”.

Earlier in the day, Priyanka Gandhi discussed with the Congress Strategic Committee the condition of law and order in Uttar Pradesh. Former Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Shukla, who is a member of the committee later said that one of the issues that were discussed in the meeting was the rising rate of crime against women.

Earlier on Sunday, the Congress leader had expressed her shock regarding the two recent incidents of brutal violence against women in the country, stating that she was ‘deeply disturbed’ by the ‘savage rape and murder of the young veterinarian in Hyderabad and the teenage girl in Sambhal’.

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped and set ablaze by her neighbour in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal last week. The incidents of brutal violence against women have raised a furore in the country with scores of citizens on social media raising questions regarding the safety of women in this country.
