Coimbatore cops yet to nab two accused of sexually assaulting teenager at park

Three special teams formed by the Coimbatore city police is still on the lookout for two men accused in the sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl at a park in Seeranaickenpalayam in the district. A total of six men, all daily wage workers were accused, four of whom are already being held by the police.

The incident occurred on November 26 and arrests have been made based on a complaint from Class 11 student from Coimbatore who was celebrating her birthday in a park with a male friend. These six men attacked her friend and chased him away following which they disrobed the minor.

“She began to shout and call attention to her plight. When the accused realised that people were going to be alerted, they made a run for it. Meanwhile her friend came back and took her to his house,” says Coimbatore Commissioner Sumit Saran. The next day, the girl returned to her residence and then complained about the incident along with her mother at a local station.

Four men were arrested on November 28, identified as Rahul, Prakash, Karthikeyan and Narayanamoorthy, all aged between 22 and 25 years and they have been remanded to judicial custody. The two absconding men are Manikandan and Karthik. Police are confident that they will be apprehended soon.

“The girl has told us that she was molested and disrobed,” says the Commissioner. “So we have filed sections under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. She is medically fine as of now,” he adds.

According to the Commissioner, the FIR has been registered under sections 5 (u)  (Penetrative sexual assault in a child and making the child parade naked in public), 6 (Punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault), 13 (Using child in media for sexual gratification), 14 (Using child for pornographic purposes) and 17 (Abetment of POCSO offence) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
